Sonali Bendre has been a phenomenal source of inspiration for cancer patients around the world. From candidly documenting her journey of recovery to sharing stories of motivation, she remained vocal about her battle all through last year and switched on the sunshine. Her empowering messages and photographs have encouraged everyone to see life from a new perspective. Recently, she opened up about her first few days after diagnosis of fourth stage cancer, and how her husband has been a pillar of strength to her.
In a recent interview, Sonali Bendre revealed that at first, she and husband Goldie Behl weren’t informed about her stage of cancer. It was only after they had reached New York that she learnt the bitter truth from the doctors. In the beginning, Sonali didn’t want to go to New York, but Goldie insisted that she needed to leave India. As a result, she fought with him all through the flight and constantly cribbed about this sudden decision.
She said to him, “Why are you doing this? We have good doctors here. Why are you taking me away?” She expressed that in only three days, they had packed up everything and left. “I was like let’s, at least, speak to the doctors here and he was just quiet throughout the whole thing and focussed. In the day, he was organising and, in the night, as New York was wake,” she stated.
After landing in New York, they visited their doctor and it was revealed that she had fourth stage cancer and only 30% chance of survival. Sonali confessed that at that moment, she turned to Goldie and thanked him for getting her here. “Goldie always says ‘Tomorrow I’d rather feel I over-reacted, over-spent than under-reacted and have that regret that I should have done that.’ There was no time for it and we were not told that it was fourth stage but Goldie had started reading about it and he was suspecting it,” she expressed.
After battling it for six months, Sonali returned to Mumbai in December and got back to work. Sharing a picture and video of herself from her first day on the sets of her current project, she expressed that she was “grateful to be back in action” and felt “an additional sense of purpose and meaning” to it. Recently, she even did a magazine photoshoot, where she was seen embracing her scars from the treatment.
