Spoiler-Free Review Ahead
Let me start with one thing: Sadak 2 will take you down memory lane, you’ll see yourself flashing back to a terrible 90s movie where you want the journey to end but it just keeps going on and on and on. From one Sanju Baba fight to the next, I was transported right back to my childhood. Remember the days when we would watch movies in a single screen hall? Yeah, those! And what screams 90s movie better than a single guy fighting 10 baddies and making them all fall to the floor?
Mukesh Bhatt blessed us with Naam, Zakhm, Arth, and Daddy and now he’s given us Sadak 2 which basically reiterates the most cliched, exaggerated, melodramatic bakwaas that Bollywood fed us for years (that we thought we were finally rid of).
If I had to describe this film in one word I would say it’s awful but before you get a peek into my review, have a look at the trailer.
Now, Here Are 27 Thoughts I Had While Watching Sadak 2
1. I remember watching the OG Pooja Bhatt and Sanjay Dutt Sadak when I was a child, I really enjoyed that one — so maybe I’ll like this one too?
2. Okay, this is giving me major cult vibes- are all these people possessed? Am I actually watching The Exorcism of Emily Rose?
3. Alia Bhatt is a great actor, Mahesh Bhatt made some amazing films in the 90s, how bad could it really be?
4. Okay, it’s really bad.
5. This movie is 2 hours 13 minutes long, just 1 hour 58 mins to go, c’mon I have to watch it, it’s part of my job.
6. Okay, this dhongi baba looks super scary, why would anyone worship him?
7. The only thing I’ve liked till now are the gorgeous mansions all of these guys live in.
8. Alia just threatened to cut herself if Sanjay Dutt reports her to the police and to keep her word, she actually does. Wait, what’s with all this melodrama?
9. Also, straight after that, Sanjay Dutt saves her by wrapping a cloth around her arm. Coincidentally, a cloth that he’s been holding on his arm all this while. Wait, she cut herself with glass — shouldn’t he remove the glass shards and disinfect the wound before putting a dirty cloth over it?
10. Why is Pooja (Sanjay Dutt aka Ravi Kumar’s ex-wife) haunting us all?
11. Alia aka heiress-on-the-move, Aarya just said, “Aaj kal log WhatsApp par hee rishte banate hai aur usse tod bhi dete hai (Nowadays people make relationships only on WhatsApp and break them there too)” and this is the most and probably the only relatable thing in the movie.
12. So this film is about Godmen, using God to make money and exploit the innocent?
13. Okay, no this film is about mental illness.
14. Nope, it’s about screwed family ties and greedy parents willing to sacrifice their children for power.
15. Okay… it’s actually about good over evil. Are you freakin’ serious?
16. Aditya Roy Kapur just took over the screen and he’s a singer and drug addict in this film too? I feel like he’s played the same role in all his films.
17. There is also an owl by the name of Kumbhkaran in the movie, why though?
18. OMG… When will this end?
19. The only thing working for this film is the fleeting flashbacks from the original Sadak! While Sanjay Dutt has never been a great actor, we can’t deny his screen presence and Pooja Bhatt and he did make a couple worth rooting for.
20. Okay, I thought the mom was evil but everyone seems to be evil?
21. Why is EVERYONE trying to kill Alia Bhatt? And how has she survived so many plot twists in her life?
22. Alia Bhatt just told Aditya Roy Kapur that Sanjay Dutt is suicidal to which Roy Kapur replied: “That’s insane.” Uh, what, can we get some sensitivity here?
23. Sanjay Dutt just said, “Pyaar kachre ko bhi sona bana deta hain.” Any hopeless romantics falling for this tacky dialogue?
24. Okay, Kubhkaran (the owl) suddenly awakens from his slumber to save the day. Are we in some bad retelling of the Ramayana?
25. Now, Sanjay Dutt is singing with a pistol pointing at his face. This climax is more melodramatic than cars turtle-turning ten times before blowing up in Rohit Shetty films.
26. Thank you, God, for the fast forward button and this lockdown… at least I didn’t have to go to the theatre to watch this!
27. Ok the movie is finally over. Wow, I haven’t been this happy to see the credits roll in a long time!
One would normally expect that when Mahesh Bhatt makes a film with Alia, one of the most talented and promising stars of the current generation — it would be great. But sorry to burst your bubble, Sadak 2 isn’t that film. Honestly, I watched the movie so that you wouldn’t have to, I took one for the team but if you still want to embark on this journey then it’s streaming on Disney Hotstar.
I am going to rate this movie a 1 out of 5, simply because I can’t rate it any lower.
