Bollywood’s long history with sexism isn’t really too much of a hidden fact. Mostly because no one has ever cared enough to hide it in the first place, especially owing to the fact that it serves our patriarchal mindsets and misogyny so well. Take the Pyaar Ka Punchnama franchise for instance. Is it blatantly sexist? Yes! But did it work? Yes! And that’s exactly why the makers sans an iota of shame and amid much criticism continue to churn movies after movies with the same messaging.
From Pyaar Ka Punchnama to Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, watch any of these Kartik-Sunny starrers and you’d see rather skewed representations of both men and women. In these films, women are always perpetrators of all things evil and manipulative and men, the innocent victims who thankfully manage to survive it all. All of this when both the makers and the actors have been questioned about the problematic messaging multiple times. Of course, they know what they are doing, and yet they continue to do so. In fact, as per the latest media reports, the sequels of Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety are already into making. Yup, you read that right!
Actor Sunny Singh shared in a recent interaction with a leading media portal, “Luv sir (Luv Ranjan who directed Pyaar Ka Punchnama 1 and 2 and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety) has something in mind, though the timelines have yet to be decided. But Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety will definitely have a sequel while Pyaar Ka Punchnama will have a part 3.”
He further added “I got into TV by chance, but even as a kid, I wanted to be a movie star. So, I groomed myself, took classes in acting, dancing and even action, met people and was rejected several times till I met Luv sir and things finally fell in place. Rejections are a part of every industry, but I was confident I’d live my dream one day. It takes time, but eventually, talent speaks.”
Well, talent and misogynistic storylines! I mean if it was actually about believing in their talents then why would have both Sunny and Kartik done one problematic movie after the other that too with the very same treatment and plot?
In fact, little would have actors Kartik Aryan and Sunny Singh imagined that the film would make them instant stars when they signed up for Pyaar Ka Punchnama. But then it did and what followed was a barrage of films that served no purpose apart from taking women down. In fact, Kartik Aryan is so deep-set in his Pyaar Ka Punchnama ways that he can hardly do a film without sexist messaging embedded in its very core. All of this, after becoming a big name in the film industry! But then again who are we to question Kartik’s choice of films when he chooses to talk and behave like that even while he is off-camera!
As for Sunny, here’s what he has to say about the films, “The genre has always fascinated me because a lot of these films are inspired by real incidents,” said the actor. So, if we do two and two here, Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety have been all about real-life stories and supporting good talent, right? Lol, so much for being delusional!
Don’t know about you but we are certainly blaming these sequels on 2020. No other way of discussing this abomination. God save us all!
