Ghar ka saara kaam mujhe hi karna padta hai…Safaai bhi…shopping bhi! Remember this advertisement? Well, chances are that every Indian kid does and associates with it on a spiritual level, because back in the day while the kid in the iconic ad might have been faking it, this was real life for so many of us middle-class kids out there.
In fact back in school, one of my friends would never take any leaves whatsoever owing to the fact that staying at home translated to doing random chores for her joint family of 16. That said, from being sent out just to purchase condiments at weird hours of the day to randoms chores otherwise relegated to unskilled labour, we have all done ghar ka kaam as kids. I am, of course, stating the obvious when I say that we did all of that for free! But seems likes it’s not that obvious after all.
Recently, someone started a thread on Twitter by asking “Did you guys used to get paid to do chores? How much?”
Did you guys used to get paid to do chores ? How much ?

Now to say that the tweet had us flabbergasted would be an understatement. However, we weren’t the only ones gaping at the preposterous tweet in sheer disbelief. Soon enough the thread caught on and hilarious replies ensued as Twitterati began to share how they were “paid” for all these chores in a roof over their head, food on their plate, and of course, the internet.
Here’s what they had to say:
LOL! That’s Just Bad Debt My Friend
But Was All Of That Actually “Free”?
Every Brown Kid Right Now!
Honestly, That’s What We Were Told
No, We Have All Been Bamboozled
The Elusive Matrix
That’s One Way Of Looking At It
Oops!
Meanwhile, Someone Was Actually Getting Paid!
We Know Right!
Need to settle some accounts with my fam. *BRB*
