The global pandemic pretty much changed our outlook on life. It changed the way we looked at things and also taught us to adapt to the new normal. Today, masks, sanitisers and social distancing have become a way of life.
One would think that after months of reading about the grim situation in the country, it would scare people into wearing their masks correctly. But, turns out that’s not the case with everyone.
Every time I step out of my house for a grocery run, I see many walking sans their masks. And a few others have their masks lowered to their chin which kinda defeats the entire purpose of a mask. So how does one really deal with such people? Should you confront them? Step away from them? Well, here’s what we think you should do.
Approach Them Politely
When my mother and I were strolling around in our society garden the other day, I noticed women sitting on the bench without their masks. My first instinct was to comment loudly on it. However, I decided against it. The best approach in such a situation would be to strike a conversation with them and ask them why they are without a mask. Or you could just explain to them the importance of wearing one. Try not to be negative in your approach.
Move Away
It’s natural to feel threatened when people around you are mask-less. However, if you try to approach strangers, it might result in a conflict. During such times, it’s best to be the mature one and step away from such people. This way, at least you can try to keep yourself safe.
Consider Keeping A Spare Mask Handy
Since many of us have a separate drawer full of masks, we could surely keep a fresh spare one in our bags, right? It may come handy when you meet your friend who’s not wearing one.
Give Them A Stern Warning
More often than not, when I am standing in the bank queue, some person who is not wearing his mask right tries to get too close. I’m pretty sure we’ve all been in similar settings. So what does one do then? Considering this isn’t a situation where you can walk away as you need to get your work done, it would be wise to give a stern warning. Being silent and not speaking up won’t work as this is a matter of your safety. Give the person a clear warninf and if the problem persists, complain to the authority present in the surrounding.
Educate Your Family Members
If you’ve noticed your parents/grandparents taking a stroll in the park without a mask, do not turn your back on it. Educate your elders about the importance of a mask. And while you’re at it, please explain talk about the effects of lowering one’s masks too. It’s better to approach them with openness and explain your concerns.
Remember that we’re all going through this apocalyptic moment together. And even though people have started getting vaccinated, it might be long before things return to normal. Until then, wearing a mask and sanitising frequently is our best bet to survive. Best to be safe than sorry!
