Former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni bid farewell to international cricket on Saturday (August 15) with an Instagram post. Despite his absence from international cricket since last year, the announcement came as a shock to the fans of the 39-year-old batsman and wicketkeeper. The ‘Captain Cool’ chose India’s 74th Independence Day to inform the world and shared a video montage of images from his cricket career that spanned over a decade-and-a-half.
He wrote, “Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired.” Take a look!
In his cricketing career, Mahi played 350 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 98 T20 Internationals (T20Is). As for the 50-over format, Dhoni amassed 10,773 runs and has 10 centuries and 73 fifties to his name. Dhoni scored 1,617 runs in the T20Is he played that included two half-centuries. India’s successful skipper played 90 Test matches and scored a total of 4,876 runs with six centuries and 33 fifties to his credit.
The boy from Ranchi started his career with getting run out for a duck in his debut ODI in 2004. However, he leaves behind a rich legacy that will be difficult to replicate. Under his leadership, India won the T20 World Cup 2007, the 50-over World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013. He is the only wicketkeeper to have scored a double century.
