We have mostly seen actress Debina Bonnerjee aka ‘TV’s Sita’ clad in six-yard sarees and heavy jewellery, crying glycerine tears. The actress made her debut almost a decade ago as Sita opposite Gurmeet Choudhary (her husband) in the mythological show, Ramayana. Seven years later, she again reprised the role of the goddess just for an episode in the TV show, Uff! Yeh Nadaniyaan. The actress was also offered the role of Sita in the show Sankatmochan Mahabali Hanuman, which she declined because “it would have meant repeating the role for a longer duration.”
Cut to 2019, Debina decided to take a break from her ‘goddess avatar’ and explore a different genre with a new show, Vish-A Poisonous Story, which is a supernatural series that premiered on Colors TV last month. She plays the antagonist in the show, which revolves around the enigmatic world of Vishaili and Vishaila, who look like ordinary people but in reality belong to the family of a rare species born from the crossbreed of a human and a snake.
Debina is not only experimenting with a new genre, but the actress is also trying on a new wardrobe. In the show, she is seen flaunting her bikini bod for one of the sequences, which is considered a big deal on telly. Debina believes that times are changing and so are the perceptions of TV audience. Speaking about showing off her bikini body for the first time in her career, she said, “Actors need to be flexible when it comes to stories. I was nervous initially, but I knew that the plot line of the show demanded this. My character as Vish Kanya is of someone who doesn’t care about anyone and that has to reflect in my acting. I think times are changing and people are more accepting, irrespective of the medium of storytelling. My fans have always supported me.”
In a TV interview earlier, she also opened up about how she is enjoying playing the antagonist. She said, “The range is outstanding. From doing harness action scenes to wearing a body rig and doing high drama scenes to absolute natural scenes to drama to melodrama to comedy, I think I am exploring it all here. The character is not bound with any restrictions of language dialogues or body language, I am just free to act and behave in any way under any circumstance that adds that extra spice to the character wherein as a Goddess I am bound with loads of restrictions and yet make it believable and convincing.”
Do you think this supernatural diva will beat the ‘sexy as hell’ Naagin Mouni Roy?
