Actor Kalki Koechlin recently surprised her fans when she announced that she was five months pregnant. The Gully Boy actress revealed that she was expecting her first child with boyfriend Guy Hershberg, an Israeli musician whom she has been in a relationship with since the last two years.
Gushing about the new changes in her life, she said, “I already feel the changes in the way I react to things. I am more deliberate, slower, more patient. When motherhood comes eventually, it brings with it a new consciousness to your sense of person.” She also revealed her plans of having a water birth, because the process is known to be less traumatising for the mother and the child.
We’re sure Kalki’s friends and family are ecstatic over the news, but we’re curious to know how her ex-husband Anurag Kashyap, with whom she shares a friendly equation, reacted. In an interview with a leading daily, Kalki said, “He’s (Anurag) just welcomed me to the parents’ club and told me to call if I need anything. Seeing Aaliyah (Anurag’s daughter) growing up and my own brother Oriel too, I’ve already got a glimpse into this role of a lifetime.”
Kalki has revealed that she and Guy have already picked a gender-neutral name for the baby. Talking about her pregnancy journey so far, she said, “God, the first three months were terrible! I have developed so much respect for all the mothers out there who work or have to go through all this without emotional support. The second trimester is fun. I have the energy to work-out, and I am cheerful at work. The kicks are amazing. Feels like there’s a little footballer in there!”
Speaking of work, will she continue to act after the baby comes? “I still want to work but it is less about the rat race and more about nurturing oneself through one’s work. It becomes about infusing concentration and energy inward,” she said.
Kalki met Guy during an all-girls trip to Isreal. A pianist from Jerusalem, Guy moved to India this year. “What I fell in love with was his calm,” Kalki revealed.
The couple already has many plans set in motion about the baby. Given the multi-cultural identities of both herself and Guy, the baby will grow up learning five languages, including French, English, Hebrew, Tamil and Hindi. “I am aware that these are struggles my child will have to face, and yet I am grateful for the mixture of influences that I have had,” said the actor.
On the work front, Kalki has just finished shooting a Tamil episodic film for a Netflix series. She has to complete Season 2 of My Indian Life, a podcast for the BBC. She’s in the all-woman cast of a play written by Rehaan Engineer, based on an adaptation of Chekov’s Uncle Vanya that will debut at the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa later this year. And now she’s counting down to January when she’s due.
