Yesterday was a sad day for all of us when the news of Cafe Coffee Day Founder & Chairman, VG Siddhartha’s death was confirmed. On Monday night, he was reported missing and his body was recovered from the Netravati river on Wednesday morning in Mangaluru, Karnataka. According to reports, he had jumped off the Ullal bridge into the river committing suicide.
In the loving memory of the founder of India’s largest coffee chain, CCD changed their bright red logo to black across all their social handles. “Today we remember the legend that inspired us all. Thank you, Chairman VG Siddhartha, for your vision, leadership and the great legacy,” read the post assuring that CCD outlets are not shutting down–“We stand committed to his vision and will continue building on his legacy.”
The comments by people, who knew him and who didn’t, filled the post with love for the man and his work. One comment read, “I’m from the 2006 batch. One day I got an opportunity to meet Siddhartha Sir personally, I was completely amazed by his kindness, humble & positive attitude. From nowhere from coffee plantation till chain of outlets to a Brand he established this empire, created employment opportunities to thousands of people including deaf and dumb and now this…. This news made me real sad. You will be always missed Sir. Rest your soul in peace!”
Soon, Twitter was flooded with people from all over the country sharing their CCD memories in honour of the coffee baron. The hashtag (#CCDMemories) has been trending since yesterday. Love stories, first dates, friendships, even some start-up ideas all happened ‘over a cup of coffee’ at a CCD outlet.
