Falling in love, at first sight, is one of those things you either believe in or you don’t. TBH, the concept is so fairytale(ish) that it’s hard to believe it can actually happen in real life. But then there are couples and their stories that remind you to keep your faith in love. Meet Rahul Malde and Sushank Chhiber, the same-sex couple who might change the way you think about love.

Sushank, who is New York-based Sushank, was born in Germany and he shifted to NYC when he was 11. He travelled to London in 2017 for work and there he met Rahul, a hairstylist by profession, through a dating app. Rahul was the first person he messaged via the app and they had their first date on December 31, 2017.
Rahul and Sushank’s first date was all about cuddling, watching TV and cosying up at Rahul’s home.

“On our 2nd date, I said, ‘I love you!’ He was like, ‘Sushank, baby steps.’ But a few dates later, he said it back. We started this thing called ‘ABCD’ dating, where we’d plan dates according to the letter we were assigned. That’s why from escape rooms to chocolate making to flamingo dancing, we’ve done it all,” Sushank told Humans of Bombay.
But it wasn’t all rosy for Rahul and Sushank, the couple also had their ups and downs. Once they had a fight over Rahul not being comfortable about making their relationship public. “Once, I tagged him in a photo of us & he was uncomfortable with it being public. There was so much screaming & crying that night, but we talked it out–letting go wasn’t an option. The fights just drew us closer,” said Sushank.

The next step was to meet each other’s families. “I was the first guy he took home. His dad said he felt like he’d known me forever,” Sushank said in an interview with Human Of Bombay.
After dating for one-and-a-half years, Sushank planned a beautiful proposal that involved a private yacht and stunning fireworks.
It was July 4, 2019 (Independence Day in New York) when Sushank popped the question just when the fireworks were about to start. And Rahul said ‘yes’. Recently, they celebrated their proposal anniversary and posted some cute pictures and a video on their Instagram feeds. Check out their pictures!
The couple is hoping to get married next year and will probably plan for a baby soon. “I don’t think I’ll ever stop having butterflies around Rahul & I don’t think he’ll never stop making fun of me. When I call my in-laws ‘mummyji’ or ‘papaji’, he makes fun of me trying to be the perfect ‘bahu’. And we still fight, cry & spend hours making up. But that’s the beauty of being so vulnerable around each other, but still so madly in love”, said Sushank.
