Urvashi Rautela has no filter and that often gets her in trouble. However, sometimes she is just asking for it. Case in point—the problematic statement that Urvashi made at the recently held Indian Sports Honours 2023 event.
During the event, Urvashi was asked to comment on Sonali Kulkarni’s controversial remarks on Indian women. Sonali had earlier received a lot of flak for saying, “In India, we sometimes forget that many women are just lazy. They want a boyfriend/husband, who earns well, owns a house, and performance at work guarantees regular increments.”
Urvashi looked quite confident when she started with her answer but ended up blurting out the most ridiculous crap. She said, “This doesn’t apply to me ‘coz everybody knows I’m an outsider. Everybody knows how hardworking I am. Kudse apne balboote par I hav made a career in Bollywood. Globally, fans know me. I am the only Indian girl to win Miss Universe India twice and the youngest judge in history to judge Miss Universe. This doesn’t apply to me.”
Sadly, Urvashi didn’t stop just there and made it worse by adding, “This quote applies to all the “velli girls” out there.” She did add “I mean, I don’t want to hurt anybody” in the end but the damage was already done. This video is painful to watch but do try:
Well, I def have some questions for the best, most accomplished, and most enlightened woman on Earth after listening to her statement:
How Did She Manage To Win All Those Pageants?
All those pageant wins and Urvashi still doesn’t know how to give an answer. Forget that, she doesn’t even know how to listen to the question. She is well-versed in the art of making it all about herself though. Watch the video again and you’d realise the question wasn’t even about her.
What Did She Mean By “Velli Girls”?
What does she even mean by “velli girls”? Women who are not hustling as hard as her? Women who do not have jobs? Women who are housewives? This is easily one of the most irresponsible things that Urvashi has ever said.
How Is This Different From What Sonali Said?
Sonali made a stupid remark by calling women “lazy” while conveniently forgetting that her logic can apply to any gender. Plus, she forgot to account for decades of patriarchy. It is 2023 and still, so many women are conditioned to think that they need to take care of the home while men go out and earn! Her statement was ill-informed and sexist. The question is—how is Urvashi’s remark any different? Didn’t she also conveniently push other women under the bus with a sweeping generalisation just to brag about her own achievements?
Not cool, Urvashi! I expected better than you. We expected better than you!
