Chop Chop: The Only Guide You Need For Giving Yourself A Trim At Home

The itch you’re feeling? Yeah, we know the one. We have felt it too, and we’ve been trying to fight it for so long. We are, of course, talking about cutting your hair while in self-isolation. Before we get into this, we want to make it very clear: If you can avoid cutting your hair during this time, please do. It doesn’t matter how many times you have seen your hairstylist do it, in normal circumstances, giving yourself an at-home haircut is never a good idea.

However, there are times when we find ourselves in far from normal circumstances, and while we by no means advocate at-home chops, we also understand that sometimes the split ends need to go. When we are in isolation mode, that means we don’t know when we’ll all next go to a salon. That’s when, we realized the opportunity at hand; it’s only right that we equip you with a few pro tips, so you have a better chance at doing it right!

Tips To Cut Your Own Hair At Home

Wet Your Hair First

First things first, cut your hair while it is wet. Not getting your hair wet beforehand makes it difficult to get straight lines. So make sure your hair is wet before trimming.

Keep Things Minimal!

A big and common mistake most folks make is misjudging angles and cutting off too much too soon. Trim a little and see how it looks instead of cutting off 2 inches and having no solution but to let it grow.

Tension Is Key Here

Ensuring that hair is pulled tight allows for scissors to glide through strands easily and makes for a much better, cleaner finish. Pull tightly before trimming so that there’s good tension.

Refine Your Hair Kit

While it is difficult to have a full-fledged professional kit, it is advisable that you invest in some hairdressing shears and a comb at the least. A fine-toothed comb works best for sectioning but any size will do.

Get Snipping!

All you need is a towel, a comb with wide and fine teeth, scissors, a scrunchie, and fine mist spray. Once you have gathered those, check out our play-by-play of trimming your own hair at home.

Step-By-Step Guide To Trim Your Hair At Home

Step 1: With a centre parting, section your hair in a straight liner from the crown of the head to the ears. Pull forward the hair in front of the ears and use a scrunchie or a hair tie to put up the back of your hair.

Step 2: On both sides, comb out the back inch and tuck it behind the ear for now.

Step 3: Comb the front section forward and pull your comb down at a 45-degree angle towards the end, keeping tension. Then, connect the short pieces in the front to the long, untouched pieces. You can do this by snipping and etching up to get rid of unwanted ends.

Step 4: Go little by little – you don’t want to cut off too much. Keep cutting the front part of your hair from top to bottom, towards the floor.

Step 5: Don’t forget to check along the way that the sides are even by bringing both ends side by side in front of your face. Once you are done with that, take out your ponytail. Divide your hair onto both sides, and cut it into ends vertically. This will soften blunt ends while adding a little more dimension.

Step 6: Part your hair now where you usually like and if you are happy with how it is looking. Section the front of your hair from the end of your brow again and, angling away from the face, use the scissors to slither down the ends to get rid of unwanted pieces.

Happy chopping!
