Let’s get one thing straight — as crazy as it sounds, no two shades of red are the same.

Now that’s out of my system, I want you to know that red lipstick is one of my favourite beauty products. If you take a quick peek into my make-up pouch, you’ll find at least 7-8 red lipsticks! From matte to gloss, I take pride in collecting red lipsticks. I don’t know what’s the deal with red lipstick, but I think when I paint my pout that colour, I instantly feel confident, powerful and sexy. The only disheartening part is that no matter how many red lipsticks I own, I never truly feel convinced. Until one day…
Last week, I was out shopping at the mall to buy myself a pretty dress for New Year’s Eve. While I was waiting in line for my turn at the trial room, a lipstick promotion caught my attention. I put the dress back on the hanger and gravitated to make-up. What I saw on display made my heart skip a beat. (Whoever said that love, at first sight, does not exist did not probably see me when I checked out the M.A.C Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour range at the store.)
With so many shades to choose from, I felt like a kid at a candy store. Each shade I tried turned out to be prettier than the other. However, after trying almost every shade from the range, there was one that caught my attention — a bright red lipstick shade called ‘Feels So Grand’ (Rs 1,900)
It was the perfect shade of red for me! Not too bright, not too dark — this baby felt like I was holding a gold nugget in my palms. Everything was going fine until I checked its price tag. — Rs 1,900 on a liquid matte lipstick? Hell no! Even my ‘Ruby Woo’ (Rs 1,500) wasn’t as expensive as this one. With a smile, I carefully kept it back on its shelf and walked away from the store.
Just when I thought I’d get over it, I didn’t do much progress as I expected. On the contrary, I started obsessing about it. I thought about it on my way home from the office, when I was taking a shower, in the middle of conversations with friends, and even at night just before I went to sleep. After a week of contemplation, I went to store and picked it up.
As soon as my card got swiped, I immediately got the jitters. I mean, splurging around 2k on a lipstick when you already have a dozen of them lying around at home does make you feel guilty. But not for long. After I unwrapped the new lipstick, the very sight of it made me feel like every penny spent was so worth it. My candy red pout fetched me compliments wherever I went. It even encouraged two of my friends to pick the exact shade up.
I have no regrets about buying this lipstick because the colour instantly dries up and lasts on my lips for a good 5-6 hours with zero touch-ups. In all honesty, this lipstick is one of the best ones I’ve ever owned. It feels like an extension of my personality and makes my pout look even more attractive. I’ve been wearing the shade every alternate night and I think I’m going to make it my signature shade.
