Skincare is important, but what about scalp care? After all, the scalp is skin too. Just like the rest of the skin on your body, the scalp also produces sebum and sheds dead skin cells. A neglected scalp is prone to infection, dandruff and product buildup. All these factors hamper the growth of healthy locks as well. Hence, it’s important to learn how to look after your scalp. If you don’t know how to do so, then we will teach you!

The Right Way To Take Care Of Your Scalp

Remember, a squeaky clean scalp is a healthy scalp!

If you’re someone who sweats often at the gym or uses plenty of hair styling products, then cleansing your scalp with shampoo at regular intervals is essential. Wash your hair every two days to prevent product buildup and fungal infections on the scalp. Not washing your hair often is also one of the main reasons for itchiness, flakiness and hair fall.

Do you spot dandruff?

Dandruff and dry scalp are two different scalp problems. Unlike dry scalp, dandruff is caused due to a fungal infection. No home remedy or regular shampoo will get rid of dandruff, you need an anti-dandruff shampoo. A product that contains either of these key ingredients – salicylic acid, ketoconazole, pyrithione zinc or selenium sulfide. Also, when using an anti-dandruff shampoo, let the product stay on your scalp for 2-3 minutes. This gives the product enough time to work its magic.

Less is more

Straightening creams, curling gels, hair serums and oils – take a break from all of them for a while. The less product you use the better for your scalp and hair. Only use styling products if you have to step out for an important event or function. Using them on an everyday basis can take a toll on not just your scalp, but hair as well.

The sun is not your friend

UV rays are as harmful to your scalp as they are for your skin. Just how you would apply sunscreen on your skin, find hair care products that have sunscreen in them. It could be in the form of a spray, cream, oil – there are a variety of good quality hair care products available in the market that have SPF in them. If you don’t want to use a hair product, covering your head with a scarf or a hat should be fine as well.

Yes, tight ponytails and braids look amazing, but here’s a fact about them – they put pressure on the scalp. The tighter the hairstyle is, the more hair and skin it pulls. This ultimately leads to hair breakage, hair loss and a swollen scalp. Keep your hair open or opt for loose ponytails and buns to reduce the strain on the scalp.

And that’s how it’s done! So regular washes, a few good products and healthy habits can result in a clean scalp and gorgeous hair.
