Despite only being “a film about a plastic doll with big boobies” Barbie and Greta Gerwig managed to do a lot for women. It also left us with one of the most relatable monologues, and of course, some very unrealistic standards in Ken. Ryan Gosling definitely helped, because it takes a secure man to pull off a character like that. So we decided to revisit the man’s own guide to spot a Ken.
It’s for when you aren’t sure if a person is actually nice or just pretentious. During the Barbie premiere, Amelia Dimoldenberg asked Ryan Gosling if there’s a way to find a Ken, because God knows, the world needs more of them. So, Gosling went on to explain the simple process of spotting one.
According to him, you just have to drop something around a man. If the man picks it up and leaves, without expecting anything – basically not hindering your personal space, then you’ve got the man. He’s Ken. It sounds simplistic but it makes a lot of sense. Of course, he then went on to sport the ‘Kenergy’ when Amelia dropped her placards. He picked them up and left – like a tutorial, because again, god knows, men need it.
“Drop something. A Ken picks it up and gives it to you, and then quickly goes away to be respectful.”
We may never find a Ken, but it’s good to know that they can exist.
