The Fascinating Story Behind Madhuri Dixit’s 10Kg Lehenga From Devdas

Sanjay Leela Bhasali’s Devdas was a masterpiece and no film has ever come close to its grandeur. The elaborate sets, stellar star cast, and songs made it one of the most iconic movies ever. And the stunning costumes added to the magic. It was Madhuri Dixit’s character, Chandramukhi, who wore some of the most exquisite outfits in the movie. However, it is her mirror-embellished gold lehenga which didn’t even feature in the film that continues to love in our heads rent-free.

Madhuri’s iconic lehenga was designed by ace designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. The handcrafted lehenga featured real mirror work gorgeously enhanced with rich Zardozi embroidery. The skirt featured ten panels that took a team of 50 highly skilled artisans two months to complete and the whole outfit weighed around 10kgs!

Though originally created for the movie, the mirror lehenga didn’t appear in the film but was featured in the film’s posters. Later, it was also featured at ‘The Fabric of India’ Exhibit, held at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. And you can now see the lehenga in real life too as the masterpiece is currently displayed at the NMACC museum.

BRB, gotta book my tickets for the NMACC exhibit stat!
