We love these frosty months, but our lips definitely don’t. There isn’t anything sexy about dry and chapped lips – what a way to ruin our selfie game. There are some simple solutions, however, products and home treatments, that can help to keep our lips supple and soft.
1. Moisturise before you apply your liquid lipstick
Matte lippies are our favourite, and we know they are immensely drying BUT they are especially worse during the dry months. Using a good moisturising lip balm before applying lipstick can save you from drying out your lips further. We suggest you let the lip balm soak into your lips while you do the rest of your face.
POPxo recommends: Maybelline New York Baby Lips Color Balm – Pink Lolita (Rs 143) is tinted, and acts as a good base colour for your lipstick.
2. Stick to a bedtime routine
Another great way to ensure beautiful lips is to include moisturising them along with your nightly routine. Before you go to bed, apply a good lip cream or medicated balm to really help plump up that pout. Doing this at night helps the product work its magic all night long, for great lips in the morning.
POPxo recommends: Nivea Essential Lip Care Balm (Rs 41) has nourishing jojoba oil and shea butter that will help with dry lips.
3. SPF isn’t just for skin.
Sun damage can affect already cracked and dry lips, so making sure your lip balm has SPF is imperative. Use a good SPF balm before you head out the door.
POPxo recommends: Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Lip Moisturizer SPF 15 (Rs 149) has SPF 15 to keep your pucker protected.
4. Use a lip scrub for flaky skin.
If your lips are in dire need of attention, it’s best to exfoliate them. Use a light lip scrub made with sugar and almond and massage it onto your lips gently. Do this treatment 2 to 3 times a week, making sure not to over exfoliate and cause irritation. We prefer natural sugar scrubs that are gentle yet get the job done.
POPxo recommends: Forest Essentials Lip scrub Cane Sugar (Rs 525) has very fine granules that have been combined with olive oil, Kokum butter, organic beeswax, fresh fruit and flower juices.
5. Check your face cleanser.
The facewash you are using may not be so good for your lips. Facewashes with salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can often cause dryness too. So make sure to stick to mild face cleanser (unless you have acne), or use a lip balm before washing your face.
POPxo recommends: Grape Seed & Sea Buckthorn Mild Foam Scrub (Rs 335) is made for sensitive skin and is mild on skin, not drying it out.
6. Almonds to the rescue.
Cracked, cut and dry lips require lots of love and no chemicals. Many fragrances can cause irritation, which is why it’s best to go for nourishing almond oil, loaded with vitamin E and A that will cure those lips right up.
POPxo Recommends: Khadi Sweet Almond Oil (Rs 228) is 100% pure oil and nothing else.
7. Say yes to beeswax!
If you’re one of the lucky ones and your lips haven’ seen the bitterness of winter then there is one thing you have to do – maintain them. We suggest using a lip balm with beeswax as it’s natural and protects your lips from damage. Use 2 to 3 times a day.
POPxo recommends: Burt’s Bees Lip Balm (Rs 999)is go-to for many people around the world as it really works!
