Remember when Alia Bhatt admired Deepika Padukone’s “beautiful soul”? There’s something so wholesome about a woman hyping another woman. It is the gentlest and yet the fiercest form of war cry against patriarchy’s oldest tactic—pitching women against each other. And it’s so refreshing to see the new generation of Bollywood actors getting the memo just right. Well, except for a few. Why, of course, I am talking about Taapsee Pannu and her recent AMA.
The Haseen Dilruba actress just hosted and answered a lot of questions ranging from her favourite holiday destination to upcoming films. It was a light-hearted Q and A session until somebody asked Taapsee if she was planning to get married anytime soon. The actress answered it with a “joke” that didn’t land well. She said, “So, when am I getting married? I am not pregnant as yet. So, it’s not anytime soon. I shall let you all know” and then broke into peals of laughter.
People have been pointing out on social media how Taapsee’s answer sounded like a taunt at actresses like Alia Bhatt and Swara Bhasker who conceived before marriage. Well, I am disappointed if that was Taapsee’s motive.
When Taapsee Talked About Actresses Empowering Each Other
As someone that fans look up to as one of the most fearless voices in the Hindi film industry, this wasn’t expected of Taapsee. I am legit talking about someone who proudly talked about the importance of women empowering each other in a 2021 interview. While speaking to a popular digital media platform, Taapsee shared, “Gender-equality or empowerment will happen only when the actresses empower each other, when they stand up for each other, when they appreciate each other. I really feel we should start appreciating each other more. Only then the next level of empowerment will happen.”
See how the mighty have fallen?
I don’t see how any of what Taapsee in her AMA said falls in the category of women “appreciating” or “empowering” each other. It is a below-the-belt dig that’s not just an insult to a couple of actresses but to the entire idea of feminism. It is 2023 and we certainly expect our well-educated and influential celebs to do better. Here’s hoping Taapsee realises she hed a foot-in-the-mouth moment!
