5 Sindhi Wedding Traditions I Bet You Didn’t Know!

Sindhis love their diamonds and I love Kiara Advani for wearing loads of them on her wedding day!

While we know all about Kiara Advani and Sidharth Malhotra’s shaadi outfits, there’s hardly any info about the actual ceremony. It was a union of Punjabi and Sindhi traditions and from the pictures, I can only tell that both communities like to ‘live life king size!’

Thanks to Bollywood, most of us are somewhat familiar with Punjabi traditions. But I was curious to know what really happens at a Sindhi wedding. So I caught hold of a Sindhi friend and now I have an idea about all that went down at Suryagarh, Jaisalmer!

Pouring Oil On The Bride

During this pre-wedding ritual, also known as ‘head bukki,’ a group of married ladies from the girl’s family pour oil on the bride’s hair. And then follows the haldi ceremony. It’s done to enhance the bride’s beauty and give her a natural glow before the wedding. Well, I now know the secret to Kiara’s glowing skin!

Tearing The Groom’s Clothes!

Okay, we all do this for fun anyhow, but it’s a Sindhi wedding custom for real! Known as ‘Saanth,’ the groom is first doused with oil, then his clothes are torn away! The groom’s family must rip his kurta in one go without it getting stuck. This represents him leaving behind his single life and beginning a new one. I wonder if Sidharth had to go through this. I’d love to see the snaps! *wink*

Devouring The Staple Dish!

Serving guests a special Sindhi kadhi prepared from tomatoes is considered auspicious. This is usually done during an afternoon function. A popular Sindhi snack made of crispy, fried and spiced potatoes called ‘aloo tuk’ is also served.

No Saat Pheras!

While most Hindus take seven pheras around the fire, Gujaratis and Sindhis take only four. The first three rounds are led by the groom, and the bride leads the fourth. While most people believe that this practice is done to save time, it actually represents the four pillars of a happy married life: Dharma (religion), Artha (prosperity), Kama (love), and Moksha (liberation).

Passing The Salt

This is a Sindhi post-wedding ritual in which the mother-in-law hands the bride a handful of salt. The bride then passes the salt to the groom. The groom passes it back to her without spilling. It’s like passing the parcel! This back-and-forth must be done three times without spilling. It represents stability and a happy marriage.
