Sexist, misogynistic, toxic—these are the words that come to our minds every time someone mentions Kabir Singh. Surely, we are not alone. Then again, there are still those who do not necessarily agree. Film’s lead Shahid Kapoor is one of them. After constantly defending Kabir Singh for years, Shahid just made the most ludicrous remark.
Speaking about Kabir Singh and its controversial success in a recent interview, Shahid called it a ‘family movie’ and well, we do not know how to react.

Kabir Singh is a lot of things but not a movie you’d watch with your parents or kids. There are several scenes in the film that scream ‘DO NOT WATCH WITH YOUR FAMILY’. However, to our surprise, Shahid doesn’t seem to understand that.“My last film, Kabir Singh, was technically an adult film, but the number of people who have liked it and watched it with their families is unbelievable. Somehow, it made it to the family space despite being edgy and aggressive”, the actor says.
Dear Shahid, just ‘coz some people made the mistake of watching Kabir Singh with their families, it doesn’t automatically become a family watch. A movie with so many clips that objectify women, glorify drug abuse, and promote violence and toxic masculinity can’t be categorised as a ‘family film’. It can’t be right for parents to let younger, more impressionable audiences watch any of it.

In the past too, Shahid has defended his character in the film. “I heard so much about it and of course, everybody will have their point of view. I don’t think Kabir is a perfect character who needs to be worshipped or anything. You are watching a character who is a little crazy and has extreme tendencies. But that’s how life is. There are all kinds of people and the fun of acting is that you can enjoy that on screen,” he said during one of the interviews.
Sure, a character can have grey shades. However, it becomes a problem when this character is made to be a hero and his vices are praised and looked up to.
The scariest thing here? Of late, the gossip mills are abuzz with reports of Kabir Singh 2 being in the works. But are we ready for a sequel? Absolutely not.
