Selena Gomez’s oven-fresh manicure has once again ditched tradition. The singer-songwriter pasted five pastel brights onto the lacquers that marvellously failed at capturing basic cold-weather rules: dark, earthy, and cosy. But this failure did not have the hallmarks of one. It emerged an eye-catching rebel that challenged the grey, brown, and black winter-girl mood board to a colour-drenched battlefield.
This display didn’t exude the opulence of an all-white manicure or the conventionality of a basic French do-over. It allowed a summer nail-art trend some airtime during the peak of winter. Here’s how nail art wizard Tom Bachik subverted the rules and principles of hot-girl winter with ‘skittle’ nails.
Selena Has Broken Another Cold-Weather Rule With Her Skittle Nails
The multi-coloured nail-art trend punctuated Selena’s otherwise one-toned aesthetic with a sense of playfulness that chaperoned her to two events: Jimmy Fallon and Variety. The singer-songwriter’s all-black ensembles absolutely approved. While Bachik chose to paint each nail a different colour, you can alternate between two or three colours too. The nail-art wizard whittled Selena’s nails into soft, squoval-shaped tips that divorced the drama of long, razor-thin nails. He proceeded with a swish of purple, mint green, and three variations of blue. Because when Sel wants it all, she wants it all. And this time it was a riot of colours!
The result was a playful, not-so-serious manicure that Sel accessorised with an egg on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The snippet is as glorious as the nails. Thanks, Bachik. Check it out!
This is not the first time Gomez broke the rules. Bachik lacquered Selena’s nails in splashes of a summer-like yellow for the premiere of the singer-songwriter’s new documentary titled ‘My Mind & Me‘. This happened in November. There’s something about the way in which the colour contrasts the magenta of the gown that’s so effortless — though the colours are starkly different from each other, the contrast between them is not jarring at all, and that’s what cements it as iconic.
While many of us gravitate toward icy-blue nail art designs, silver-ish shades, neutral-toned backdrops, or even dark-hued aesthetics in general, Selena’s manicures always hold their own. PSA: This trend might afflict you with an insatiable craving for skittles. You might want to arm yourself with some of those beforehand.
