Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is an exquisite surprise. It is not a ‘happily-ever-after’ love story. It is not a family drama either. For those who pay attention to the right parts, it is a haunting love story about unfulfilled love! But that sounds a tad too ominous. Let me rephrase it—RARKPK is like a gift concealed inside another gift.
The range, the beauty, the warmth of this Karan Johar film hits you when you least expect it. Before you know it, you have watched one of the most beautiful love stories ever and it is not Rocky and Rani’s “prem kahaani“. Let me explain.
An Ode To Old-School Love
Art’s not supposed to be perfect. It is supposed to make you feel. RARKPK has won exactly there. A huge shoutout to KJo and his team of able writers. They knew how to resurrect the charm of old-world romances with Jamini Chatterjee (played by Shabana Azmi) and Kanwal Lund (played by Dharmendra) story. Rocky and Rani’s love story only happens because they are on a mission to reunite the estranged lovers.
What went wrong? Why did they get separated? Will they reunite? These are all questions that I won’t touch. The answers would be best found in the theatre. But I can promise the journey would be worth it.
Any love story that can match the emotional depth of the iconic Hindi melody “Abhi na jao chhod kar”, has already passed the touchstone test for epic romances. KJo was confident in his narration and played parts of the song not once, not twice, but thrice in the film as proof. You’d feel something tugging at your heartstrings whenever it does. Many would be reminded of the one that got away. And everyone would feel the power of true love!
Karan’s team of writers has beautifully roped together old shayaris and songs to create a heart-touching experience. They have succeeded too. You’d be smiling, you’d be crying, and you’d even catch yourself singing at points. And just when you find yourself wondering ‘What’s this sorcery,’ Alia Bhatt will give the perfect explanation by saying,“Ab samajh aaya unhe mohabbat gaano se nahi, yaadon see thi“!
In short, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is a big fat Bollywood romance in all its glory. I insist you go watch it on the big screen ‘coz no reviews or summaries would be able to do full justice. But if I could sum up what I felt while watching the film, I’d just say:
“Shaam bhi thi dhuaan dhuaan, husn bhi tha udaas udaas, Dil ko kaee kahaaniyaan yaad si aa ke reh gaen”
