For the longest time, we have been waiting for the trailer release of Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday’s Liger and the day has finally arrived! NGL, the movie appears to have all the elements of a masala blockbuster—a peppy soundtrack, a larger-than-life hero, dope fighting sequences and a nefarious villain.
However, just when we thought Liger is going to be a total fun ride, one particular scene stood out like a sore thumb. In the trailer, we see Ananya trying to cut Vijay out of her life and he takes a hockey stick and tries to hit her. Yes, you read that right!
Truth be told—it is not just that this narrative is problematic (duh!) but the way it is glorified in the trailer is honestly infuriating. Just when we thought Vijay has gotten out of the toxic man-child Arjun Reddy mode, he is once again going down the detrimental route.
Now, we are aware that it is unfair to form an opinion without knowing the entire story—but under no circumstances does a man has the right to harass or hit a woman. Period!
In an earlier interview, Ananya talked about the film and said, “We had a lot of fun when we were shooting in the USA together. We have wrapped the film, and I just wrapped up dubbing for the film. So now it’s almost fully ready. The film is going to come in August and it is a full-on masala film. I think it will make people really happy watching it”
So far, we aren’t ‘happy’ with how Ananya’s character has been portrayed in the film, strictly based on the trailer. Now, we are hoping that the film will prove us wrong.
In our opinion, filmmakers and actors need to be sensitive when it comes to portraying violence against women on the screen. We need to do better and that’s not up for debate!
