The Pros

You’re manually scrubbing all that build-up and dirt off the surface of your skin to reveal younger, healthier-looking cells underneath; tackling dullness in one go. This unclogs pores in the process too; significantly reducing the occurrence of breakouts and flare-ups. Loofahs can tackle dry, flaky spots of the skin and smooth over wrinkles and creases caused by them too.

The Cons

Because their job is to clean your body, loofahs come in contact with a lot of bacteria while at it. You’re constantly touching your body with the loofah; letting bacteria infect your skin in the process.

Loofahs aren’t particularly gentle on all types of skin. They can cause microtears on the surface, trigger dryness, leading to redness and inflammation too. For sensitive, acne-prone skin, this option is a no-no.

The Measures

But if you want to give it a go, keep these pointers in mind.

  • Trash your loofah in about 60 days.
  • If your skin feels irritated post showering, stop immediately.
  • Clean it once a week with a bleach-water solution. Let it soak for in the mixture 5 minutes before washing it with plain, cold water next.
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent the growth of bacteria.
  • Avoid loofahs for a few days after shaving/waxing the skin.
  • Avoid using it on the face or genitals.
  • Moisturise your skin right after showering.
