Nothing can stop a bunch of determined, spirited people from achieving what they want, least of all the Delhi smog. The best example of this was on Sunday, November 12, when about 5,000 people got together for the 10th Annual Queer Pride Parade.
Since 2008, hundreds of people in Delhi have been getting together and gathering in Central Delhi to protest Section 377 of The Indian Penal Code which criminalises homosexuality. A welcome change this year was the decrease in number of people wearing masks to protect their identities.
This year the parade ended at Parliament Street instead of Jantar Mantar, where it usually ends, due to ban on all protests at Jantar Mantar.
With slogans like “We’re here and we’re queer” and “I am gay, it’s okay!”, this year’s pride rainbow flag was 15 meters long, a record, and people danced on dholaks throughout. The parade had to be the most colourful event thanks to the quirky posters, colourful saris, beautiful head accessories and loads of balloons!
The most remarkable and notable thing about the parade was that over the years, they’ve maintained independent operations and have not accepted any kind of corporate sponsorship so that they could maintain their agenda of equal rights, privacy and freedom! It is purely by the members of the community, for the community!
