It was 3 am in the night when my best friend Facetimed me, as my hand stumbled across the bedside table, I quickly got a hold of my phone and hit ‘accept’. I don’t know if I am inheriting my mother’s habits now that I’ve been living with her for the past year, but an impromptu call in the middle of the night makes me pray for everything to be alright. Who have I become? Anyway, this 3 am call was in fact a call for prayer. There she was, my best friend, with tears rolling down her cheeks, swollen eyes, and a snotty nose (ew). Her no-good of a boyfriend had broken up with her and couldn’t find a better time to do so than 3 am on a Wednesday night. But however tired you are, when best friend duty calls, you answer. And so did I. She drove over to my place for some heavy ice cream and chick flick binge. That was a month ago. Last night, when I found my dear friend dumped under a pile of blankets, magazines, and chocolate wrappers still, I knew it was time.
Cue the music. Because it’s time for the inevitable glow-up of the broken hearts, and all the damsels in distress are invited. Here is exactly what my best friend and I did for her ultimate break-up makeover, and it’s a secret so good, I need to let you guys in.
Step 1: The Ultimate Clean Up
It’s time to wash your tear-stained face and deeply cleanse and condition your hair that you have not brushed through since the past week (yeah, we know). As you exfoliate your body, scrub away your ex’s memories with it. Take your time in the shower and make sure you step out of it a brand new person – literally.
Step 2: Damage Control
Now that you’ve washed all the heart troubles away, it’s time for some damage care, of our favorite kind – hair care! Albeit there is some weeks’ worth of missed haircare we need to make up for, but that’s why we have intense treatments! Pull your deep conditioning hair masks out and take them for a spin (in your bathroom). While the nourishing mask does its job, move on to the next step.
Step 3: I Said Break Up, Not Break Out!
You might be crying real tears, but your skin is crying for your skincare! Rip open a fresh pack of face sheet mask, and another of an undereye mask. Keep them on for 15 minutes before taking them off. Gently rub in the excess serum and then drench your skin with your favourite hydrating serums and creams.
Step 4: Bring Your A (Hair) Game
After you’re done with your skin and hair care, we come to shaping. Plug your hairdryer in, and give yourself the trending Cindy Crawford blowout.
Your heart wasn’t protected but your hair can be. Prep your hair with some heat protectant, and go to town with your blow dryer. To get this hot new blow-dry trend:
- Start by sectioning your hair in 4 parts – top, both the sides, and back.
- Use a round brund on small hair sections to smooth them straight, and then create a bending roll towards the end.
- Use your blow dryer on this lifted hair section, while giving volume at the roots.
- Roll the blow dried hair lock back in a curl and secure it with a clip.
- Unclip all rolled locks of hair at the end, and enjoy the DIY blow dry of your dreams.
Step 5: Sharp As A Tack
To go with your bad and boujie hairstyle, we’re throwing it back to the 90’s popular winged liner. You weren’t sharp while selecting your boyfriend, but your liner can be. Go for a dewy makeup base that shows off your (very) recent skincare, along with blushed cheeks. Draw a sharp winged liner to flaunt and, scene.
Which friend are you rescuing from a bad breakup?
