Remember Tanya from Permanent Roommates? That fun – slightly overbearing, but hands down the sanest – character who was a part of India’s most popular web series. So, who is this girl who gained popularity with Every Delhi Girl Ever and then refused to look back? Nidhi Singh, a small-town girl who made her big city dreams come true, that’s who. She moved to Mumbai from Allahabad at the age of 17.
“Mumbai is a guru, I came here, when I was young and impressionable. I had to convince my parents though, they’re both from an academic background, my father is a doctor and my mother is a teacher. So to both of them the idea of it was bizarre, me alone in a metro, adjusting to the big city and surviving the people. But I made a pact with them, let me survive graduation and then we’ll talk about it,” she tells me, candidly, in a rather animated telephone conversation.

Three years have passed since she found her way onto our laptop screens, and a lot has changed. Nidhi is all set to make her Bollywood debut with Brij Mohan Amar Rahe, a crime-comedy alongside Arjun Mathur and Sheetal Thakur. When asked about her character in the movie, she says, “Sweety plays Brij’s wife in the film but she is trapped in a loveless marriage and all they do is fight, life is clearly not in favour of her. But she comes out of something so toxic and yet is always motivated to do something better and survive. But she isn’t the pity-party, like every character in the movie, she is grey and edgy.”
What sets this film apart? It was shot in 21 days of pure passion and hard work where the crew survived on barely 2 hours of sleep.

So, does this mean Nidhi is stepping away from web series and into mainstream cinema? Maybe, maybe not. But, she does maintain that she has some remarkable memories with her web series crew, “Whenever I go back, I know there would be no awkwardness and I can just sit and chat with them like old times,” she said. We’ll never forget the comic timing and iconic chemistry Nidhi Singh and Sumeet Vyas shared on screen. “I miss Sumeet’s wit,” she quickly says. “He’s a very funny guy but not in the most obvious way, his sense of humour is very dark and funny. I really miss that.” The two were known to arrive at their shoot together, coordinating travel because it was a long journey. But also because we really enjoyed each other’s company rather than just enjoying each other’s craft. “He’s brilliant in front of the camera. He’s the buddy who I want to tell all my problems to; his solution would be a beer. It’s been fun to reunite for small shoots, even if we just get to meet each other for a day, we behave like long lost friends,” reveals Nidhi.
Brij Mohan Amar Rahe is all set to hit the screens on December 8th, 2017 and we can’t wait to see Nidhi on the big screen. Though she thinks she’s still trying to figure out what life has in store for her, we’re sure some great opportunities await this rising star. From the girl next door in Permanent Roommates, to a badass survivor in Brij Mohan Amar Rahe, her journey looks promising.
Good luck, Nidhi!
