The New York Fashion Week is a hotbed for all things bizarre and wonderful, from oversized bras on top of clothes that look like a bullet-proof jacket for boobs to clothes with 3D vagina prints, we’ve seen it all. This year’s edition of the fashion fiesta was no different.
The week-long runway at this year’s New York Fashion Week has just ended and left us with mixed feelings. On one hand, we’re in awe of the beautiful gowns and on the other hand we are in splits over the absurd displays by Kaimin. It’s funny and ridiculous at the same time. Kaimin’s theme of ‘Oriental Garden – Utopian Discord’ was not really the lush “garden” we were hoping to see since the models walked the ramp in vagina wigs. What did we say? See for yourself.
Hairy, right? These vagina wigs or merkins are an artificial covering of hair for the pubic area. But who would want a wig for down there when we live in a ‘smooth and hairless bikini area’ century? It’s like men shaving them head off and putting on a wig. Well, Hollywood begs to differ. It is one of Hollywood’s most private accessory. Actors like Kate Winslet have often worn merkins when shooting for sex scenes in movies to show more than just skin.
In fact, merkins have been in use since the 1400s. Women wore them to prevent crabs, lice, and other health and sanitary concerns. In the 1700s, mercury was used to treat sexually transmitted diseases and one of the side effects was the loss of pubic hair. To disguise this condition, a Merkin was employed by both men and women. Kaimin’s collection has just resurfaced the toupee in a wild twist.
The use of such fancy merkins in Kaimin’s collection does not have anything to do with health, though. It’s about acceptance of individuality by taking pride in your body, and ultimately, your uniqueness. Natural is beautiful.
