Ever wondered what outer space smells like? Well, now’s the time to satiate your curiosity. If you happen to be a fragrance lover who is also fascinated by all things space and science, here’s our version of a big bang breakthrough. You will soon be able to smell the outer space! According to various reports, a fragrance that was developed years ago to help astronauts get used to the smell of space will now be made available for the general public as well. The formula to make the perfume was obtained via several Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Spoiler alert: astronauts have compared this smell to that of “seared steak, raspberries, and rum.”
Peggy Whitson, an astronaut, in one of his interviews once revealed that space whiff, “is kind of like a smell from a gun, right after you fire the shot. It has almost a bitter kind of smell in addition to being smoky and burned.”

The team behind making ‘Eau de Space’ is currently fetching community support via the Kickstarter campaign to make the fragrance available to commoners. The good news is that the Kickstarter has already raised more than $250,000 so far. Chemist Steve Pearce, the same individual who re-created the outer space smell for NASA in the year 2008, has now been sought again to make the perfume for all the scent and space-loving people. ‘Eau de Space’ product manager Matt Richmond is hopeful that the launch of this perfume will aggravate people’s interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning.
Now, some quick insight into the product. The perfume will come in four-ounce bottles and can be worn by you as a regular everyday fragrance as well. It will be mild and not at all strong which will increase its wearability, provided you end up liking the unique scent.
Curious to get a whiff of space? We can’t wait either! However, one thing’s certain that the perfume is not getting launched anytime before August since the campaign itself ends on August 17, 2020.
