My Desi Girl! Disney Is Introducing The First Ever Indian Disney Princess & Here’s The Full Scoop

We can’t keep calm as Disney is all set to take the desi route and add an Indian princess to the franchise. The Bride and Prejudice director Gurinder Chadha and screenwriter Paul Mayeda Berges are about to shake hands to helm Disney’s original musical feature. This is a major announcement and we expect a global frenzy once the film is released. Here’s everything you need to know about the project:

All About The Project

The upcoming Dinsey film will be about a “dynamic princess” from Indian history. While the plot remains under wraps, looking at Gurinder Chadha’s illustrious work history, we’re sure the project is in good hands. Lindy Goldstein is producing the film through her ‘Lindy Goldstein Production’ banner.

Imagining A Desi Disney Princess

Imagine a Disney princess gorgeously clad in Indian clothes and representing the desi woman of today. That said, we expect to look at a well-rounded character who is much more than her ethnic clothes. We hope to see a character that subverts the stereotypical representation of Indian women in Western cinema. Can Gurinder give us that strong desi heroine who becomes an inspiration for Disney viewers across the globe?

Remember how Elsa and her blue gowns from Frozen became an instant rage? With an Indian version of the Disney princess, we expect nothing less.

 About The Director

Chadha has made quite a few films and TV shows in India under her banner—Bend It Films. Her latest film, What’s Cooking, served as the Opening Night film for the 2000 Sundance Film Festival. It was also the first British script to be taken into the Sundance Institute’s Writer’s Lab.

In 2015, both Gurinder Chadha and Paul Mayeda Berges debuted the stage musical version of Bend It Like Beckham in London’s West End to great acclaim. Her most recent film, Blinded By The Light was acquired at a whopping deal of $15 million at the Sundance Film Festival.

Well, we are hella excited & can’t wait to see the new desi addition to the Disney clan.
