Didn’t we all dream of winning the crown of Miss India or Miss Universe at some point while growing up? I know I certainly did! I can’t even count how many times I stood in front of the mirror, practicing my walk and rehearsing my winning speech. Yet, I never went ahead with it—perhaps held back by my own self-doubts and apprehensions. But what happens when you finally decide that the world is your oyster, and nothing can stop you from achieving your dreams? You become an icon, an inspiration. Just like 81-year-old South Korean fashion model, Choi Soon-hwa. The queen is making headlines for being the oldest Miss Universe Korea participant.
In a world where women are often stereotyped based on their age and held back by societal pressures, Choi Soon-hwa is breaking barriers and emerging as a true inspiration. She began her modeling career in her 70s, after working as a hospital caregiver—a true example of resilience and boldness. Choi then went on to become one of the top 32 finalists for the Miss Universe Korea 2024 pageant hosted in Seoul, South Korea. She said in an interview, “Even at this age, I had the courage to grab onto an opportunity and take on a challenge.”
For the competition, Choi strutted down the runway in a stunning beaded white gown and showcased her singing talent. While she did not win the crown, she won the ‘Best Dressed’ title. “I want people to look at me and realise that you can live healthier and find joy in life when you find things you want to do and challenge yourself to achieve that dream.” The Miss Universe Korea 2024 crown went to 22-year-old Han Ariel, a fashion student.
A few years back, the age limit for participating in Miss Universe was between the ages of 18-28. But after drawing criticism, they finally removed the limit to attract more inclusion and diversity. Well, about time!
As women, we fight so many battles, and one of them is trying to fit into the beauty standards set by society—thanks in part to these beauty pageants. But this, right here, shows that nothing is impossible. Thanks, Choi for following your heart and shattering stereotypes.
