There’s no greater heartache than watching the fairytale-love of our favourite Bollywood couples fall apart. It was around two years ago when Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora announced that they were ending their 18-year marriage. For a long time, the two remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind their split. Recently, Malaika Arora opened up about her divorce and talked about her family’s response.

Malaika got candid with bestie Kareena Kapoor Khan on her talk show. Talking about her divorce, she admitted that she was initially told not to go ahead with this decision. She wasn’t surprised though, as she knew that it would be the first thing that anybody would hear. “I think sab ki pehli yehi raai hai ki mat karna. Koi aapko nahi kahega ki, ‘Haan, haan, please jayiye, kariye.’ That’s the first thing, ki aap soch samajh ke yeh decision lena. I went through the same thing,” she said. However, she decided that her happiness was more important than all this even if it meant taking such a major decision.
Talking about her marriage, she said, “We eventually did think a lot of things and weighed every pro and con. And then we decided, it’s better off that we move our separate ways because we’d just be better people,”. She revealed that they were making each other “extremely unhappy” which was impacting everybody else’s lives around them, as well.

She explained that the night before her divorce, her family had asked her to think things through again and make sure that this is what she wanted. “I had my family sit with me and ask me yet again, ‘Are you sure? Are you 100 per cent about your decision?’ So I think that was something I heard all along and rightly so. These are the people who worry and care so they will definitely say that,” she expressed.
However, when her friends and family realised that Malaika knew what she was doing and was certain that she wanted to end her marriage with Arbaaz, they supported her through the process. “Everybody said, ‘If this is the decision that you’re making, then we’re really proud of you and in our eyes, you are a strong woman.’ So for me, that kind of gave me that extra strength that I needed,” she admitted.

The former couple, who have a 16-year-old son Arhaan, have continued to remain friends. When asked about their son’s impact on the divorce, Malaika expressed that she would rather see Arhaan in a happy environment than being in a disruptive one. “I think with time, my child is far more accepting and flourishing. And he can see that we both as individuals are far more happy,” she admitted.
If grapevine is to be believed, Malaika is currently, in a serious relationship with actor Arjun Kapoor. The two have been spotted together several times, at parties and dates around Mumbai. If the grapevine is to be believed, they might even take their relationship to the next level and get married soon.
