Adding glitter to a makeup look has always been my favourite way to spice up the fit; it looks good absolutely anywhere. You can wear it as eyeshadow, use it to accentuate your collarbones, and add a little shine to your shoulders – the possibilities are practically endless! And with the holiday season in tow, there are a lot of bland looks you can refine with just a little bit of glittery embellishment.
However, there are a lot of issues that arise when you use glittery products. They crease easily, fade before you even reach the event, and often, simply refuse to stick to your body despite multiple rounds of primer/application. So the question of the season is: is there a way to make glitter last longer? And I’m here to say, yes. There is!
Prep and Prime
A great glitter look starts the night before. Hydrate your eyelids before bed with a high-quality eye cream for a glowing base.
Hydrating eyelids the night before with eye cream and using a primer designed for glitter creates a more adhesive base, making sure your sparkle won’t slide off halfway through the event.
In the morning, cleanse your face and begin with a clean slate; use a primer specifically designed to hold onto glitter.
Douse Yourself In Glitter
The most important hack to keep glitter on is to invest in high-quality products that don’t flake easily and have a formula that stays on for hours. These work like a charm and feel luxurious at an affordable price.
Set And Forget
If you’re using loose, chunkier glitter – I recommend going in with setting spray. Once your glitter is perfectly placed, lock it in with a good setting spray. It’s crucial to ensure your glitter doesn’t migrate to parts of your face where it wasn’t invited.
Use Strong Adhesives
When it comes to body glitter, the right glue matters. Hair gel for large flakes, petroleum jelly for a non-sticky feel, lip balm for small areas. Hand sanitiser offers a light hold, and eyelash glue for the big pieces does the job in the long run and makes your shimmer stay for much, much longer than if you just used some lotion beforehand.
DIY Shimmer
Mix things up with a homemade setting spray/shimmer oil DIY to apply over your glittery makeup or body shimmer and increase the effect. The spray formula helps to set the makeup while adding an extra layer of sparkle that stays put.
To make your own, add finely milled powder highlighter to your setting spray. You can even create your own shimmery body oil with some body oil and glitter pigment – a personalised sparkle that’s all you!
Mastering these techniques ensures your glitter not only shines brighter but also stays in place longer.
