When it comes to Bollywood stars, their fees make the most noise. Sometimes, even after not delivering a big hit in a while, stars managed to get cores for a project. How does this happen? Finally, Karan Johar spilled the beans about Bollywood stars and their salary demands.
During Film Companion’s round table discussion, Karan spoke about how PRs create a perfect post for a Bollywood star and they use it to justify salary hikes. KJo said, “There is the gloriousness of paid PR, everybody is the ‘mega star’ and I can write anything. I can write myself as the beautiful, handsome, Tom Cruise-like star and it will be printed tomorrow. Gorgeous as 50 just like Tom Cruise, you just write and you do get it out.“
The filmmaker also questioned film critics who become part of the ‘Paid PR’ campaign. “The stars are before the film’s release. Four stars, three stars, three and a half stars. 80% of it is paid. You pay the paparazzi, you pay the houses to maintain the perception. It is all fine.“
Karan surely knows how to drop major truth bombs! It is an interesting take on how celeb culture is now focused on social media stats, instead of real-world connection with the fans.
In the same interaction, Karan claimed that he is ‘fed up’ with young stars who have hiked their fees by almost 100%. KJo shared, “There is a younger order that is yet to prove its muscle at the box office. They’re asking for Rs 20 or 30 crores. For no reason.“
You can all always count on Karan for keeping things real in Bollywood ‘coz he ain’t afraid of speaking the truth.
