Who can forget that infamous episode of Koffee With Karan where Kangana Ranaut openly called Karan Johar the ‘flag bearer of nepotism’? It was enough to open a can of worms and start an insider vs outsider debate in the industry. But you know what they say, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade! And this is exactly what the filmmaker plans to do.
Karan Johar is coming up with a brand new show called Showtime. And as you might have judged by the title, the show will talk about our desi entertainment industry and controversial topics, including nepotism. Recently at the trailer launch of Kajol’s upcoming web series, The Trial, Gaurav Banerjee (head of Content at Disney+ Hotstar) said, “Karan Johar is going to come back with a new season of Koffee With Karan. He’ll be shooting for it soon. He’s making another interesting show for us, Showtime, which is about nepotism in Bollywood. He knows something about it, I guess.”
About Showtime
The buzz around Karan Johar’s new show started in September 2022, after it was announced at the global Disney fan event, D23 Expo. Talking about the same, Karan once said, “I am excited to associate with Disney+ Hotstar for our new collaboration, announced at the prestigious D23 Expo. In addition to yet another exciting season of my beloved show, Koffee With Karan, happy to announce an all-new Dharma Production series, Showtime, which will lift the curtain on India’s entertainment industry’s biggest trade secrets.”
In addition to this, Disney+ Hotstar also released a synopsis that read, “Bollywood is the land of dreams – dreams that are dreamt with eyes wide open. Showtime, a drama series, brings forward all the off-screen fights for the power that runs the show. A deep, raw, unconcealed and uninhibited look into the battle lines that are drawn and crossed to keep the camera rolling and the audiences clapping. There is only one emperor that sits on the chair – but what’s a throne without a fight to get there? So, lights… camera… and action!”
Wow, the Bollywood ka keeda in me cannot wait to watch this show. Wondering if it’ll be as juicy as Karan’s KWK!
