Yeah, it sounds bizarre, doesn’t it? I think I empathise with you. I mean, sure, we’re resurrecting Y2K trends with Billie Eilish-approved space-buns, Bella Hadid’s razor-thin brows paired with frosted eyeshadow, and Dua Lipa’s skunk-stripe face-framing chunks but are we embellishing our teeth too?
Oh, side-note, it’s not just rappers we’re referencing. We’re sure you’re imagining a mouthful of gold-covered teeth. Nope. We’re talking Gen-Z bedazzling their teeth with heart-shaped gems. Kim Kardashian bedecking the bottom set of her teeth with pearls. And Instagrammers are reinventing the trend by painting their teeth…with polish. And it’s safe to say that we weren’t surprised when we spotted Bella Hadid sporting a diamond-studded gem sitting atop one of her canines either—after all, the ’90s play muse to much of her aesthetic.
Also, this isn’t a new trend. It was so in between the 90s and 2000s. Though, back then, these accessories were fashioned by black rappers and A-list celebrities like Rita Ora, Rihanna, and even Miley Cyrus in recent years. Now, they’re more accessible—what with the close relationship between beauty and self-expression. And just how is this trend revolutionizing dentistry?
I didn’t think I’d say this—but these accents look supremely cool. And even though I’d never dream of jazzing up my teeth (the only time I’ve ever subscribed to a ‘bold’ trend was when I got my belly button pierced), I stumbled upon some cute (you decide) interpretations of the trend on Instagram that I quite liked—from minimalistic to edgy, this round-up features butterfly-shaped stones, dozens of multi-coloured gems, (Dua Lipa, you might want to check this out), and designer-inspired bling. Yup, you read that right. They’re statement-making. Literally.
