Janhvi Kapoor has come a long way from the timid, shy girl who just stepped into Bollywood at 21. She proved herself by taking on difficult projects and working on her acting skills. The actress did it all but the only thing that was missing from her journey was her mom Sridevi. But did you know that before the legendary star’s untimely demise, Janhvi was actually going to do a film with her.
In 2018, Janhvi’s debut film Dhadak looked like the perfect start for her, but there was another film that was supposed to feature her. Karan Johar wanted Janhvi to take up Alia Bhatt’s role in Kalank. Meanwhile, the character of Bahaar Begum in the film was supposed to be played by Sridevi. Unfortunately, Sridevi passed away before it could happen.
Janhvi’s dad and producer Boney Kapoor opened up about Janhvi’s original debut plans in an interview. He said, “He wanted Janhvi to play the role, which was eventually played by Alia Bhatt in Kalank. And he wanted Sridevi to do the role eventually played by Madhuri Dixit. Later, he decided to make Dhadak with Janhvi. Till Sridevi was alive, Kalank was called Shiddat. She had agreed to do the film reluctantly.”
When Karan Talked About Casting Sridevi In Kalank
Karan was heartbroken when Sridevi passed away before he got a chance to work with her. In a 2019 media interaction, he admitted that he wanted Sridevi as a part of the multi-starrer Kalank. But eventually, he accepted that it was a better decision to not go with the Janhvi-Sridevi jodi.
“I am not sure if I would have been the best director for her because I would have been too much of a fan. And somewhere a filmmaker has to be very objective about his or her work. And fandom can make you lose objectivity and I think I would have lost complete objectivity. So I am glad I never directed her as I would have given her a failure, which she did not deserve.“
As a Sridevi fan, I feel heartbroken that I never got a chance to see her with her daughter on-screen. RIP, legend!
