Meet Charu Sinha, The First Female IPS Officer To Head CRPF’s Srinagar Sector

Whether it’s the first woman pilot in combat, Gunjan Saxena or Sushmita Sen who is an epitome of beauty with brains, women have proved time and again that they are here to shatter the glass ceiling and smash the patriarchy in the face. In another inspiring news, India welcomed the first female IPS officer to head CRPF’s Srinagar sector.

Meet Charu Sinha, the first IPS officer appointed IG in one of the toughest, terrorist hot-spots of Jammu and Kashmir. Charu Sinha is a 1996 batch Telangana cadre who will now head the Srinagar sector. She was previously appointed as IG in Bihar to take on the Naxals where she carried out various anti-Naxal operations. She was then transferred to Jammu in CRPF where she spent a long and successful tenure.

She received an order last evening about her posting as the new IG in the Srinagar sector making her the first Indian woman to do so. Other than her, there will be 6 IPS officers and 4 senior cadre officers who have also been inducted in the CRPF. Charu Sinha will be heading all the operations that will be conducted in this area.

When a leading news agency spoke to CRPF, they said, “Srinagar sector is located at Brein Nishat, Srinagar (J-K). It started functioning in 2005. Srinagar Sector has operational jurisdiction over three districts of J-K- Budgam, Ganderbal, and Srinagar and Union Territory of Ladakh, “It includes 2 ranges, 22 executive units, and 3 Mahila companies. Apart from it, Srinagar Sector has administrative control on Group Centre-Srinagar,” the paramilitary force added.

The Srinagar sector was started in 2005, and in the last 15 years, it has never had a woman officer overlooking the operations at this level. This new appointment comes as a refreshing change and is a stepping stone to many other aspiring women officers.
