Oiling your scalp is not rocket science. Just pour a few drops of your best hair oil and massage it into your scalp. Seriously, how can anybody do it wrong?
For most of us, applying hair oil is something we do as a ritual once a week to keep our hair healthy and nourished. Well, that’s your first mistake! In fact, even if you are oiling your mane more than once a week, you may be doing it wrong or not applying enough.
But fret not, as today we’re telling you the right way to oil your hair so that it becomes bouncy and shiny just like in hair commercials.
The Right Way To Oil Your Hair
We’ve all been oiling our hair for a long, long time now. It’s time to hit refresh and keep these simple pointers in mind to make your hair stronger with every use.
Choosing The Right Hair Oil
The first step is to choose the right hair oil for your hair and there are two ways to go about it.
Option 1: Choose the hair oil according to your hair woe. If you have dandruff, then choose anti-dandruff hair oil and so on.
Option 2: Instead of choosing a specific hair oil, choose a carrier oil to fight off your hair woes. For eg, tea tree oil is amazing to fight off dandruff, lavender essential oil is excellent to boost hair growth, etc.
If you have a greasy scalp, then avoid using heavier oils such as coconut and opt for lighter oils such as argan or onion hair oil to avoid scalp buildup.
Never Forget The Roots
Have you ever wondered why your hair ends always look damaged? It’s because not enough nutrients reach the hair ends, making them appear dull and lifeless.
One rookie mistake we all make while applying oil is not applying enough or any hair oil to our hair ends. So, it’s imperative that we not only apply a generous amount of hair oil on our lower stands too.
Pro Tip: Another great way to hydrate all of your hair, especially your ends, is by adding a few drops of oil to your hair mask. Keep the mask on your hair for at least two hours to allow your hair to reap all the benefits.
Always Comb Your Hair
A good ‘ol champi is an age-old secret to having longer, shinier hair. But it can also lead to hair fall and hair breakage. Confused? Allow us to share some light.
Not combing your hair before massaging your mane can lead to your hair getting tangled, especially if you have Rapunzel-like hair. The solution? Start by combing your hair ends and then your scalp. Apply the hair oil the same way too, first the ends and then the scalp and then massage like there’s no tomorrow.
Plus, all the combing will stimulate blood flow in your scalp, making your hair grow fast and how!
Make It Hot
A hot oil massage is something we all have seen our grandmothers do. If you really want to improve your hair’s health, then heat it up.
In a bowl, add a few drops of your regular hair oil and add a few drops of argan and onion oil. Next, add a few drops of essentials oils such as peppermint, lemon and lavender. Heat this beautiful concoction in a microwavable bowl for not more than 10 seconds and then apply it to your scalp.

If you have time on your hands, then do this added step. Take a towel and dip it in a bucket full of warm water. Squeeze out the excess water and wrap the hot towel around your head and lie down.
Now that you know how to properly apply oil thy mane, here are some common mistakes to avoid:
– Applying a lot of hair oil will not undo the hair damage. So, make sure you don’t do this, as you will have to use a lot of shampoo to wash it off. This will strip away your scalp’s natural oils too.
– Do not wash your hair an hour or two after applying the oil. Wait for at least 4-6 hours before washing your hair. Leaving overnight is an excellent idea too.
– Do not tie your hair in a tight hair bun as it can cause hair breakage aka split-ends.
– Do not massage your hair too vigorously as your hair might end up breaking at the roots.
– Choose a mild shampoo to wash your hair, especially if you have thin hair. Avoid over-shampooing at all costs.
