Face-Shaving Newbie? Here’s An Expert-Approved Guide To Choosing The Right Facial Razor

Gone are the days when face shaving was just a man’s personal-grooming ritual. It has now become a widely-practiced, gender-neutral beauty regime. Thanks to its multiple skincare benefits. Face shaving can help remove dead skin and give you an even-toned complexion. Not to mention, these advantages come without any pain, cuts or burns that you get from facial waxing and threading.

Despite the upside, there’s just one complication that might leave you feeling confused about this practice. There are a gazillion varieties of razors available in the market. And with each one promising to give you the best results, choosing the right one might get overwhelming. So, we got in touch with Dr Pooja Chopra Senior Dermatologist, Aakash Healthcare Super Speciality Hospital, Delhi for some clarity. She went on to explain how different types of razors are meant for unique facial hair qualities and skin textures. And we’ve broken it down for you right here to make your life easier:

Razor Type: Single Blade

“As the name suggests, a single-blade razor uses one blade to safely remove any unwanted facial hair,” states Dr. Pooja.“ While the disposable varieties of these razors need to be discarded after one session, the reusable variety can be used six to eight times. However, one must wash them properly and keep the blade covered to avoid rusting.

Talking about the advantages of this tool, she says, “This type of face razor helps get softer, brighter skin by removing the outer layer of dead skin on the face.” In fact, its regular use can minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and tighten the pores of your skin.

Uses:

According to Dr. Pooja, a single-blade razor works best for those looking to remove the fine vellus hair aka the peach fuzz. In fact, it can be your best bet if you don’t want to shave your entire face and just want to groom your eyebrow or upper-lip hair. This is because a single-blade razor can move through the contours of these small areas easily without causing cuts. Those with a sensitive skin can also opt for it as it doesn’t really lead to razor bumps post shaving.

Pro tip: You can easily dry shave with a single-blade razor. However, make sure to moisturise your skin well afterwards and keep the sun exposure to a bare minimum.

Razor Type: Multiple-Blades

“Multi-blade razors work with a dual mechanism. The first blade pulls the hair up, while the second and third blades cut the hair,” says Dr. Pooja.

They also come in disposable and reusable varieties. The reusable ones may come with a replaceable cartridge to avoid wastage and will help you save money.

Uses:

Dr. Pooja recommends using a multi-blade razor for those with coarse facial hair. This is because these razors cut the head as well as the shaft of the hair. So, you can get rid of the thicker hair in a single glide.

She also warns against using it if you have sensitive skin. This is because its chances of causing cuts is higher than that of single-blade razors.

Pro tip: Using a shaving cream or a foam-based mild face wash can help prevent any cuts while using a razor with multiple blades.

Razor Type: Safety Blade

A safety blade razor is also a single-blade razor, meant for a safer, long-term use. It has a protective device positioned between the blade’s edge and the skin to avoid any injuries.

Uses:

If you’re looking for the advantages of an ordinary single-blade razor with an extra layer of protection, this one’s your perfect match. However, safety razors  might not be very effective on coarse hair. Not to mention, they don’t move through the smaller areas of the face like eyebrows and upper-lips very easily.

Pro tip: Compared to regular single-blade razors, safety razors are easier to handle. So, you can begin your face-shaving journey with them.

Razor Type: Electric

Electric face-razors are battery-operated, pen-sized tools. They’re equipped with oscillating or rotating blades behind a metal guard that move automatically to shave off the hair.

“They give a smooth finish and don’t usually cut the face. They can also be used without a shaving cream,” Dr. Pooja explained.

Uses:

Since electric razors are gentler on the skin, they can be used to remove fine hair. They also work really well for those with sensitive skin and are perfect for hair removal from the eyebrows and upper-lip area.

Pro tip: Always make sure there’s no hair or dirt trapped between the blades of an electric razor to avoid any skin infections.
