Rani(Alia Bhatt) in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is our quintessential modern-day woman, who exudes fierceness, intelligence, and confidence. On top of that, she is charming and elegant in a way that does not contradict her strong personality. So it goes without saying that filmmaker Karan Johar was successful in capturing her persona and reflecting it through her elegant style. But what impresses us the most is how instead of putting Rani in pantsuits and structured dresses, Karan chose dreamy sarees for her. But still, it makes us wonder why a powerful and modern character like Rani only wore sarees throughout the movie. Well, we have some answers now.
In a recent interview with a leading portal, Karan finally revealed the reason behind Alia’s look in the movie. Calling sarees a “beautiful gift”, Karan said, “What is the problem? Why do we associate modernity with a western garment? I have met so many women who wear sarees so beautifully and they are so beautifully progressive and very much with the times, intelligent, well-read, well-traveled, well spoken, they wear sarees. It’s just that we associate modernity and progression with western garments.”
He further added that though Rani has studied abroad, she grew up around her grandmother and mother. So for her character, “those influences are very strong.”
Karan even revealed that Alia could connect with Rani and therefore she was able to portray her with such perfection. He said, “She identified with Rani and therefore could portray it with the élan and perfection that she did,”
We gotta say, if there’s something we could steal from Rani in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, it would definitely be her serene sarees. Moreover, we love how Karan and designer Manish Malhotra revived these drapes and gave them a modern feel. The message was loud and clear– you don’t need a pantsuit to feel powerful!
