The first look of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s grand digital debut, Heeramandi is out and my inner fangirl simply cannot stop staring at the gorg actresses. Featuring Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal, and Sanjeeda Shaikh as courtesans from the kothas of Lahore’s Heera Mandi, the teaser is striking. Take a look:

TBH, the actresses dripping in gold reminds me of Mastani from Bajirao Mastani and Chandramukhi from Devdas. But I’m still super-excited about this epic, first-of-a-kind series slated to release on Netflix soon.
About Heeramandi
Heeramandi explores the lives of three different generations of courtesans from Lahore’s infamous Heera Mandi aka Shahi Mohallah (royal neighbourhood). The period drama is based on the pre-independence era when courtesans were known for their art, poetry, and connections with the royals.
After watching them being referred to as “tawaifs” or the “other woman” in cliche Bollywood movies, I can’t wait to see how SLB portrays them.
Apart from it being SLB’s digital debut featuring a stellar star cast of 6 powerful women, there are 5 more reasons I’m excited to watch the show.
1. The Actress’ Looks Are Designed To Perfection
Mr. Bhansali designed each look on paper and made sure that every character’s jewellery was different to match their on-screen personas. The director collaborated with designer duo Rimple & Harpreet Narula and Shri Paramani Jewels to create these looks and the meticulous process took almost two years to complete!
2. It’s SLB’s Most Difficult Project Yet
Sanjay Leela Bhansali revealed that Heeramandi is the toughest project of his career as every episode is like a feature film in itself.
3. The Series Is As Grand As It Gets
Apart from building grand sets, he has also used almost 200 kilos of gold jewellery for this project!
4. Jackie Shroff & SLB Will Reunite After 2 Decades
The duo created pure magic in Devdas (2002), where Jackie Shroff played the iconic Chunni Babu. He has a role in Heeramandi as well.
5. It Has A Gangubai Kathiawadi Connection
Apart from sharing the common subject of prostitution, Heeramandi and Gangubai Kathiawadi share another connection. The show’s larger-than-life sets have been built in Mumbai’s Film City, where Gangubaai Kathiawadi was also shot.
I know I’ll be binge-watching this the day it releases!
