From when KWK first premiered in 2004 to Koffee With Karan 7 now, a lot of things have remained unchanged about the chat show. It is still as entertaining as it was 18 years ago and continues to enjoy huge viewership. Every season, we see some of the biggest stars gracing the Koffee couch and spilling the beans on their latest romances, families, and life beyond the film sets. And, there’s one more thing that has remained constant though—the hate that Karan and the chat show get.
Every season, there are those who watch the show with hawk eyes, desperate to spot something controversial and then tear it apart. Every episode, these people give us their “honest” opinions as well. They never get tired, they never get bored of this futile exercise in pettiness and Karan finally has a message for all of them. According to the KWK host, the joke is on these people if they are expecting the show to be ‘breaking cinematic or intellectual barriers.’
“I’ve been criticised for doing the show. So many blame and things have been attributed to me that ‘This happened because of the show; that happened because of it’. If I am not taking my own show seriously, why are you taking it? It’s a chat show with people from the industry. It’s not meant to be breaking some cinematic barriers or intellectual barriers. It’s just meant to be fun and games. Either you come and join the ride or you don’t,” Karan said in a recent interaction with an online media platform.
During the chat, Karan also commented on how all the random tags like “frivolous,” “guilty pleasure,” and “timepass” that the show has been given over the years do not bother him anymore. He added, “I’ve learned to feel like, ‘Yeah, it is a cringe binge. It is a guilty pleasure viewing. Its timepass. It’s frivolous; call it what you want, as long as you watch it’.”
The funniest part here? People continue to watch the show after dismissing and criticising it year after year. “Everyone will watch it but they will criticise,” concluded Karan and seriously, where is the lie?
To paraphrase KJo—they can love him, they can hate him but they will never stop watching Koffee With Karan!
