Gilmore Girls is not a one-time watch. I repeat: Gilmore Girls is not a one-time watch. You have to binge-watch Gilmore Girls to truly call yourself a fan. You know how Stephen Sanchez sings, ‘Georgia, wrap me in up in all your —”. That’s how GG-enthusiasts feel about the show. Because it’s like this show cradles you. Holds you. The minute you hear the words, “If you’re out on the road…“, something in you shifts, and you feel comforted. Like these characters are looking out for you. While GG’s storyline has major repeat value, you find that the show has such a 00s-themed beauty aesthetic — clips and headbands galore, lip-gloss claiming lots of screen time, and deep side-parts reigning supreme every now and then. So — which of these gals do you identify with? Lorelai’s heavy-handed flick of red on the lips? Rory’s brow-grazing bangs? Lane’s purple-dyed hair? Let’s find out now!
Do You Identify With Your Favourite Character?
Paris Geller
Paris. Paris. Paris. Did we peg our in-house debate enthusiast for an acne-zapper? Nope. Add that to her ever-growing list of skills. But her night-care regimen did feature an acne-zapping formula. Let me jog your memory — the night Francie & Co. snuck into Rory’s house to whisk her away to Chilton in the A.M, Paris’ hair was slicked back with a cloth-based headband, and the Harvard aspirant’s face displayed lots of cream dispatched onto the skin in dots. While Paris only wore makeup on dates, she sported washes of pink on the lips and cheeks — and an all-over glow that only an illuminating moisturiser could have endowed her skin with. Paris sported sport a pixie years later, and the look lives rent-free in our heads.
Rory Gilmore
Rory Gilmore is enthusiastic about a lot of things — but lipstick and eyeliner? Nah. This Gilmore paints the lacquers red — in Lorelai Gilmore’s words, “Bad girls always wear red nail polish.” — and wears pink lip balm (lip-gloss at the most) on any occasion. But this aversion to makeup doesn’t apply to the mane. Remember how she wore a flower-encrusted ‘do to prom? Fancy. She also did chop most of her hair off after Jess left town. And she did love headbands and bangs. Rory’s a clean-girl, subtle-glam-enthusiast. The older she got, the more flushed the cheeks got. While the show didn’t make too many allusions to skincare, Rory’s radiant, crease-free skin isn’t just courtesy, genetics. If you identify with her, you’re going to need to buy yourself lots of tinted lip balms, mascara, and blushers — and invest in skincare STAT! Begin with a hydrating face wash, an illuminating face mist, and a glow-inducing moisturiser.
Lorelai Gilmore
Lorelai Gilmore has two aesthetics: businesswoman and coffee enthusiast. While the former featured a deep side part slicked back into a low-hanging bun or a center-parted, no-effort ponytail along with a dusting of brown on the lips; the latter oscillated between a classic-red lipstick and pink lip-gloss. The latter saw her hair cascade past the shoulders in curls and wore pretty headbands, headscarves, and clips from time to time. And, yes, red nail polish is a must. This Gilmore loved lip-gloss — remember her discussing colour-changing lip-gloss with Rory in the pilot? Lorelai is stylish and chic, and she sure as hell conveys it.
Lane Kim
Lane Kim had an alter-ego: a punk-rock drummer whose only dream was to dye her hair purple. When she did follow through with her decision, the Manic Panic fling only for a couple of minutes before turning into a complete panic. Because Mrs. Kim returned home, and Lane realised she had to reverse her decision. Poor Rory. But Lane did sport streaks of fiery red later on. I don’t imagine Mrs. Kim allowing Lane to buy moisturisers and body lotions from Kurk’s store, but she did have Korean genetics anyway. Lane chased after her dreams relentlessly — defying all stereotypes associated with Asians — and her character was as revolutionary as was Dean’s decision to call it quits with Rory (oops).
Emily Gilmore
Emily Gilmore loved getting manicures, and not even Lasik eye surgery could stop her from lacquering her nails. “Well — if I’d missed that appointment, it would be a week before I could get another, and I’d be walking around with hobo hands,” she justified. Remember how she visited a spa with Lorelai for a night? Emily defined the concept of self-love and me-time. This Gilmore Girl always brought her A-game with her.
So — which girl are you vibin’ with?
