We’re a country with one of the highest populations in the world yet somehow the topic of sex is a taboo in our society. Most schools don’t have a sex education class in their curriculum and hence students don’t make informed decisions about their sexual health. If you have open and honest conversations about protection, consent, and sexual hygiene, children would not be so confused about everything.

She found a pregnancy test in my cupboard…
The first time I discussed sex openly with my mom was when I was in my first year of college and she found a pregnancy test in my cupboard. She was shocked and confronted me about it. Then she sat me down and asked me since when I was having sex if I was being safe and why on Earth did I have a pregnancy test. The conversation was long and ended in my mother crying and saying that it would have been the best gift I would give my husband. But now she’s pretty chilled out about it and even explained to my father how everyone has sexual desires and even though the average marriage age has increased, the body wants what it wants.

Boyfriend=Sex
The very first time I discussed sex with my mom was when she noticed I was on the phone all the time talking to a boy. Her obvious question was if I had a boyfriend and if we were ‘close’. When I said yes to both, without giving me a chance to speak, my mom lost her nerve because she thought ‘close’ meant I was having sex with that guy. She told me that I should not–under any circumstances–engage in an intimate act with a boy. Without using the word SEX in the entire conversation, she made it clear that it should only occur when I was older, mature and in a committed relationship (read marriage).

We talked like two best friends
The first time my mom and I discussed sex was when I had just started college. It was not at all a serious discussion and I wasn’t afraid at all. We discussed the topic just like two best friends would. Initially, I was hesitating but it came easy to both of us. She wanted me to know each and everything about sex ‘cause she wanted her children to be sexually aware. It would have been an awkward moment but she handled it so well blending it with her own sexual experiences! I love how my mom is progressive in her outlook on life and society.

We kept it open and honest
I discussed sex with my mother for the first time when she found out that I had a boyfriend and told me that it was her duty to talk to me about protection and safe sex. We had an open discussion about condoms and birth control and she explained to me how important it was to visit a gynaecologist for keeping vaginal health intact. I, however, was really awkward throughout it all!

It’s actually pretty scientific
My first sex talk was at the tender age of 12 when my mother was teaching me science and we are beginning to learn about cells being the building blocks of the body. There was an example of sperm cells and my mother asked me if I knew what they were. I was embarrassed and said no. She then went on to draw the diagram of a penis and the female reproductive system to explain the process of baby-making in a very scientific way. Of course, I went to school the next day and told all my friends about my new findings and we giggled our way through recess.
