Everything You Need To Know Before Dealing With Your Pore-blems

Our skin keeps changing as we grow older. Along with trying to fight wrinkles, dull and sagging skin, we also need to tackle the problem of enlarged pores around our nose and cheeks. If you’ve been learning a lot about skincare during this quarantine, then you’ve probably noticed the word ‘pores’ pop up quite often while trying to find solutions to skin troubles like acne, blackheads etc.

So, what are these minuscule problems and how do we get rid of them? Keep on reading to know more!

What Causes Visible Pores?

There are two types of pores present on the skin. One that secretes sweat and the other that releases sebum from the sebaceous glands. Everyone possesses these pores and while they are mostly hidden, as we get older, however, they become visible when the skin is not given the proper TLC it needs.

So, what causes enlarged pores? Well, there are many factors which lead to this skin issue with genetics and age being on top of the list. Other factors include:

Excess Sebum: The sebaceous gland’s job is to produce sebum to keep the skin moisturised, reduce water loss from the skin’s surface, and keep the skin soft and firm. But overproduction of this sebum leads to the accumulation of dead skin cells, oils, dirt etc which collect in the pores and stretch them out.

Sun Damage: Yes, sun damage can cause various skin issues, one of them is visible pores — even more reason to never skip sunscreen. Prolonged sun exposure can dehydrate the skin, leaving you with enlarged pores.

Blackheads: When your pores are blocked or clogged with dirt and oil, this trapped oil oxidizes, and it can result in blackheads. These small black dots can appear anywhere from your back to the chest to the neck but the most commonplace is the nose area.

Since the accumulation of dirt, oil, and dead skin cells are the main culprits for enlarged pores, it’s important to keep the pores clean. Cleansing your face twice a day and exfoliating once or twice a week (depending on your skin type) removes any unwanted dirt, oil and other debris, in turn, reducing the appearance of large pores.
