Who wouldn’t love gorgeous highlights minus the harsh chemical treatments? Well, you’re in luck, because here are a few ways to lighten your hair naturally at your own home. These methods are definitely way cheaper and will give you subtle, natural, I-was-born-with-these highlights. Give these DIYs a try to brighten your mane and beat those boring blues by knowing how to naturally lighten your hair!
Hair Lightening Tip 1. Cinna-Mania!
Cinnamon smells amazing and is also a great lightener. All you gotta do is add some cinnamon powder to your conditioner and evenly coat your strands. Use a wide tooth comb to ensure even distribution. Then clip your hair away or put on a shower cap if you like and leave it on overnight. Shampoo first thing in the morning. It’s perfectly safe for your strands to try this natural hair lightener often if you really want super visible highlights.
Hair Lightening Tip 2. Tea Time
Chamomile tea works wonders for giving your locks a golden glow. Plus, it’s a great anti-dandruff remedy, which makes it a win-win! All you need to do is boil 1 tea bag in a mug of water. Once it has been steamed for 10 minutes, let it cool and then pour it over your hair for all-over colour. If you want highlights instead, then pick up thin sections of hair and coat them well. Leave it on overnight and rinse in the AM. You can try this natural hair lightener regularly without fear of damaging your strands.
Hair Lightening Tip 3. Honey + Vinegar
Honey is a great natural hair bleach and has moisturising properties as well. You will need:
- 1 cup of raw, uncooked honey
- 2 cups of distilled vinegar
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
The olive oil adds extra hydration while the cinnamon in the recipe gives the lightening effect an extra boost. Mix it all together and leave it on overnight.
Hair Lightening Tip 4. When Life Gives You Lemons
We’ve all heard of lemon juice to give you sun-kissed streaks and this old-school natural hair lightener DIY actually works. Add some lemon juice to warm water and apply on sections framing your face and on your crown for some strategically placed streaks. Now go outside and sit in the sunlight to help activate the lightning power. Try this as often as you want, just make sure to not forget the sunblock!
Hair Lightening Tip 5. Baking Soda
Baking soda is a great, easy natural hair lightener to try at home. Simply mix a teaspoon with water and apply it after your shampoo and before your conditioner. Apply this mix about once or twice a month to gradually see the results of brightened colour. However if you have damaged strands, then you wouldn’t want to try this method.
Hair Lightening Tip 6. Henna Highlights
For reddish highlights, henna is a great natural hair lightener and is totally safe – it’s so commonly used after all! Add 3 tablespoons of henna powder to a cup of boiling water. You can also add equal amounts of chamomile powder if you like. Once cool, comb the paste into thin sections of your hair, let it sit for 2 to 3 hours, and then rinse off.
Hair Lightening Tip 7. Awesome ACV
Apple Cider Vinegar, or ACV, is not only an amazing natural hair lightener, but it also smells fab and is a great at-home staple to use for a DIY colour job. Mix a quarter cup to one cup of water and use it as a rinse-in between your shampoo and conditioner. Be sure to leave it on for at least 20 minutes before rinsing off. Try this once a week for gradual results.
