The entertainment industry might look like a fascinating world to be a part of, but it comes with its fair share of problems. Time and again, several celebrities have spoken up about facing the casting couch and it only proves that sexual harassment remains rampant in the industry. Earlier, Suvreen Chawla, Ankita Lokhande, Ayushman Khurana had spoken about their unpleasant experiences and now, Divyanka Tripathi has shed light on her brush with the casting couch.
During a recent interview, the actress revealed that when she’d joined the industry, she had no money to pay her bills—and people recommended that she ‘spend time with a director to get a break’. She shared, “You finish a show, and then your struggle starts again. There was a time when there was no money. I had to pay my bills, EMIs, etc. There was a lot of pressure. Then an offer comes, ‘You have to be with this director and you’ll get a big break’. But why me? I was told that ‘you are really intellectual, this, that.’ Selling it off like my life will be made just by that and everyone is doing it.” This just makes us sick.
Divyanka further explained that she has always believed in herself and was always confident about bagging a project purely on her talent. “This is before the #MeToo movement. People who make such offers, and will convince you in such a way that everyone in the industry is doing it. I had seen it in the beginning; I had got my first job based on my talent. So if I got my first job based on my talent, so the next will also be the same,” she added.
TBH, it doesn’t matter if it’s a newcomer or an established name in the industry—nobody should have to experience such exploitation, ever. As for Divyanka, we’re proud of her for believing in herself and sharing her story. We hope she continues to inspire us always.
