Could This Be The Best Way To Apply Makeup? Here’s What We Think!

You know how when you go down the rabbit hole of watching beauty videos on YouTube, you start to discover some hidden gems? We’ve been there and done that. One thing that stuck out like a sore thumb, was the different techniques of applying makeup. While a lot of us use brushes or beauty blenders, there are an equal number who prefer to apply their makeup with their hands – celebrities included!

On one side, celebrities like Kylie Jenner use brushes to even apply moisturiser and on the other side, Hailey Bieber blends her foundation in with her fingers! But why? And is that the best way to apply makeup?

The Science Behind This

Applying makeup products to the skin allows more control of the amount of product being used. It also helps the product blend into the skin seamlessly, according to a number of makeup artists. Applying the makeup with hands also helps ‘warm up’ the product a little, making it more liquid and breaking it down. This allows the product to get absorbed into the skin, giving a more natural finish.

Advantages Of Using Your Hands

  • Makeup never looks painted on
  • Save you a ton of money on blenders and brushes
  • Give an even coverage, allowing you to control the coverage of the product
  • Re-using makeup sponges and brushes before washing them could lead to product buildup and hence breakouts
  • Makeup sponges absorb a ton of product that could have been used on the face
  • Bad-quality brushes could lead to their bristles coming off and getting mixed up in your products

Disadvantages Of Using Your Hands

  • If your hands aren’t washed and sanitised, the bacteria in them could transfer to your face, causing breakouts

To Round Up

While the preference of every person plays a huge role in this makeup application process, there are definitely more advantages to using your hands to apply makeup, especially your base, for a more natural finish. And if you’re using your fingers to apply makeup in sensitive spots like your eyes, it’s best to use your ring finger to tap it on your skin instead of rubbing it in, since this finger produces the least amount of pressure.

And always, always wash your hands before you touch your face – you don’t want the oils and bacteria in them to transfer onto your skin!

We’re going to be giving our brushes a break this weekend!
