There’s a reason why Kriti Sanon was cast as Sita in Adipurush. Her glow is unreal. The actress is a major skincare buff and she often lets her followers into her routines, DIYs she swears by and a few nifty hacks to keep her skin in check.
In one such YouTube video, Kriti decoded her entire morning skincare routine – products and all. And she also shared an important tip on the correct order to apply products, something we often forget.
The Correct Order To Layer Products As Per Kriti Sanon
In skincare, we should always go from the thinnest consistency to the thickest one. To explain it further she says, all watery content products like toners, essences and the likes, should be applied first, “And then you go thicker – moisturiser, and at the end oil. Oil ke upar kuch bhi lagega, who andar nahi jayega (anything applied over oil will not enter the skin). Oil is your last step if at all you like using oil.”
The right way to layer your skincare products:
- Cleansing oil or balm
- Face Wash
- Mist
- Toner
- Essence
- Serum
- Moisturiser
- Sleeping Mask
- Oil or Occlusive
The Science Behind This
Kriti’s ideology is the skincare rule of thumb. Going from ‘thin to thick’ means that after you wash your face, the first product you apply on it should have the thinnest texture. One of the reasons behind this is that, the thicker the product the thicker the molecule size. These larger molecules block the products with smaller molecules and don’t allow them to penetrate the skin as well, making them almost ineffective. But there are very few claims backing this argument.
However, the second reason is more logical. Thinner products have more water content while thicker ones are usually more oily. Watery products are meant to hydrate the skin while heavier, oilier ones are meant to lock in moisture. When you apply a water-based product first it is easily absorbed into the skin leaving it hydrated and plump. Topping it off with an oil-based product helps lock in the moisture, leaving the skin hydrated for longer periods of time.
For best results, try not to mix water and oil-based products while you layer them. For example, if you’re using water-based serums, lock them in with water-based moisturisers. And if you’re using oil-based serums, layer them with oil-based moisturisers.
Here are some water-based products to hydrate your skin well:
And some oil-based products to layer over them:
Layering products correctly enables the skin to absorb each product better, therefore making them more effective. It doesn’t get simpler than this!
